After a 4-hour bus drive, we arrived in Lisbon at lunch time. Thanks to the great advice of our host Miguel in Faro, we already knew what we wanted to do on our 1st afternoon there: visit Belem district.
In Belem district, there are some nice buildings along the river and a monastery as well. The monastery Mosteiro dos Jerónimos was looking so amazing from outside with all those small details on the white stone. This building is of Gothic-style. Inside the monastery church were some people buried and among them was VASCO DE GAMA!! After this visit, we went near the river to see the Conquistador building which is in a shape of a boat with sailors on it looking at the sea. In Portugal, a lot of building are showing some details to remind people about that period of history when Portuguese were going to conquer other places. For instance, they are a lot of ropes represented on buildings.
Then, we went to Belem tower and walked along the river. After this walking, we went to eat some pastries at the famous shop Pasteis de Belem. We were not
used to walk and visit a visit for long after our relaxing first days at the beach in Algarve so we had to go there to rest a bit 😉 Those pastries were really good and cheap but I have to say that what I loved more in this place was in fact the place in itself. The café is indeed really cosy with a lot of different rooms, the walls are covered with blue ceramics and it's really cooler than outside. Ok, the only thing that I did not like so much there was the waiter, who was not that friendly. I think it's because there are so many customers coming to the cafe that they have to hurry up to do everything. But anyway I had a really nice time there with my friends.
After this afternoon snack, we went to walk up the hill. As you may know, Lisbon is called the city of the 7 hills, so there are a lot of walks like those, but it enables you to have a nice view over the city, so it was nice. To come back to the city center we took the old tram. It's a
really nice one: old fashioned 😊
From the city center, we took the ferry to go to our host for our stay in Lisbon. In fact, he was not living in Lisbon but in Almada, which is on the other side of the river. It's a bit far but there is a ferry going there, the ride on the ferry is nice and you can then see the nice bridge and the statue of Jesus on the top of the hill.
When we arrived there, we went for a walk in Almada and I have to say than except one street with some restaurants and the harbour there is nothing really particular in Almada... But anyway, our host, his son and girlfriend were nice and we had dinner together.
