And the driving continues! Down to Geiranger today to take the ferry along the Geirangerfjord to Hellesylt - it’s one of the “iconic” things to do here and it lived up to the hype.
First things first, need to get there! I could have done the “quick and easy” route but decided to add about an hour (ok maybe more, I stopped a lot lol) to my drive by heading up through the scenic mountain pass - Gamle Strynefjellsveg. I’ve clearly not had my share of these narrow roads yet haha - this was the most narrow one yet - there was hardy any traffic (bless) but I still got stuck backing up twice and having to pull over quite often. It’s a trek lol.
Absolutely worth it though - even though it’s July, still tons of snow up here and the glacial lakes are AMAZING colour wise - was there any doubt? It was pretty windy lol which made so some fun selfies and it was cold enough (around 12C) but I lucked out and the sun was pretty strong. I stopped a bunch of times - some times just for quick photos, other times for a snack
break and to take in the view. Really enjoyed this part of my day.
On the way to the mountain pass I passed a waterfall - idk what it was called, it wasn’t on GoogleMaps which is odd bc it was quite large! There was also gushing rapids close to the road with a little path you could go down to get closer. I got so wet lol the most was insane but I will forever love a good roar of a waterfall or rapids.
Anyway! After the glacial paradise I headed off towards Geiranger - of course, som more twisty scenic roads! But these at least are wide enough for two cars. Idk if I just hit it at a bad time of day or if it’s always like this, but traffic was a nightmare at all the stop areas so I just kept going. It was pretty but I’ve seen the same idea further south (like the view over the town and fjord below, the winding road below, etc)
I got to Geiranger about 2 hours before my ferry - thought I’d just putter around shops, get a snack, etc. Holy shit Geiranger itself was
a hot mess shit show for driving though. Honestly would prefer the narrow roads to this. It’s a super tiny area down by the ferry and the parking situation is just… wild. I got really lucky and someone was leaving so I swooped in but it was next level busy… which I think is weird for a Sunday late afternoon? But what do I know lol.
I walked around the harbour and ferry area, wandered through some shops and got my variety of snacks lol - an ice cream (vanilla soft serve dipped in chocolate dust? yes please!), lingonberry and gin chocolate (omg yum) and reindeer jerky (which I didn’t try yet).
Getting out of the parking area was a treat in itself lol, but then getting to the ferry and on the boat was a breeze. It’s about an hour to Hellesylt and even though it rained half the time Geirangerfjord was *chefs kiss* just lovely. It has super steep cliffs on both sides all along without any real shoreline, which is relatively uncommon here. There’s also a ton of little waterfalls and then the famous “Sevens Sisters” falls that add to the magic of the area.
The clouds were starting to roll in low near the end too. Loved it.
From there it was a short drive up to Stranda for the night and there we have it!
