On the train today heading firstly to Myrdal (on the line to Bergen) where we change trains to Flam.
The Flam train is a very popular scenic train trip into the township of Flam where we stay overnight before continuing by ferry, bus and train into Bergen on Friday.
Some of the scenery along this first part of the trip has been stunning. Lots of lakes and rivers following the train line - or is that the other way. Train following the rivers etc.
Very busy train with comfy seats and lots of room around you to stretch out. Quite a few stops along the way but it has moved pretty well. At one stage it was showing the temp was 29 C. Has now fallen to 17 C.
Geilo was a small stop before Myrdal, that is before we started moving again. This is a ski village with lots of 3 or 4 storey apartments for the ski folk which are positioned after the station. Up the hill you could see lots of ski runs carved out of the forest. Must be a very popular place in winter. Still a bit of activity today though.
The next town, Finse was even smaller but it was obviously a mountain bike area. The first thing I noticed were the hundreds of bikes lined up for hire at the station. Next thing that impressed was the train carriage built into the accommodation building.
As we moved off there were bikers everywhere. Great country for biking. Quite a few glaciers on the hills here as well. Spectacular scenery and we haven’t even hit the Flam line yet.
Eventually got to Myrdal and changed trains. People everywhere. Told which carriages were available for the plebs. A few were reserved for tour groups.
Found our way to carriage with a few empty seat blocks. Picked one not knowing which side of the carriage would be best. Our side proved to be ok. If it wasn’t everyone went to the other side anyways.
People were clamoring for seats. Kids everywhere. Settled in and away we went. Scenery was great. We started at 866 m above sea level and were to end up at sea level in Flam.
The start of the trip takes you through a series of circular tunnels to get you down in height
slowly and safely. Problem being tunnels. Every so often you come out and there are ooohs and aaahs everywhere. Cameras going troppo.
Got to a really pretty waterfall, train stopped, everyone off, pics going crazy. Music playing then there is a lovely lady in red dancing on the rocks above where we are standing with the waterfall as a backdrop. Impressive show.
Back down we head. Too many things to take in. As Chris said, sit and enjoy rather than looking through a camera lens. Good advice. Got some pics but scenery was amazing.
Finally hit the bottom and off we get. People queued up to go back. Off to our hotel. A few minutes walk. The hotel looks out into the fjord and seems very grand. Wowsers. Lucky we don’t know how much it costs, all included in the package.
Decide to eat in. Buffet which was very nice. Maybe not the cheapest but we had a great table and the food and service were great.
Overate and decided a walk was a good idea. Wandered around the jetty area. They had floating saunas around the corner. A group of young kids were in
one. Got hot, dived in the fjord, back into the sauna. Lots of giggles and squeals. Must be having fun.
Checked out our ferry for the morning. All electric ferry. Nearly everything over here is going all electric. Have never seen as many electric vehicles as here.
Back to the hotel now after a quiet but busy day.
