Cruise day 12
Tromso, cable cars, seals, lots of walking and very expensive drinks in a rock bar 26th July 2019
Over £15 for a beer and a coke!! Okay so the rock bar was pretty cool with dishes named after the Ramones, The Clash, Motorhead and Dead Kennedys for example, but I’m glad Claire had offered to pay! There were posters of many great bands as well as framed records etc but the music they were playing was dreadful!! I have no idea what it was but if I ever hear it again it will be too soon.
Prior to that we had done some walking around Tromso. The time before that we came here it was Winter so everywhere was covered in snow. This time the sun has been out and Claire is glad she put her big coat back on board.
Our first stop was Polaria which is housed in a building that looks like toppelling dominos. The best bit of this were the seals and the various viewpoints you had to see them. Walking through a glass tunnel with a variety of seals going over your head is highly recommended. We watched a
panoramic film on Svalbard that made us want to go back....but in Winter...donations welcome.... Apart from that there was a room about climate change, some tanks with fish and starfish etc in and that was about it really. Great to see the seals but probably not worth the £14 to get in.
The two sides of Tromso are separated by a very long bridge which goes up 2/3rds of the way and down for the rest. Not surprsingly the opposite happens on the way back.... You can walk either side where people cycle as well and the traffic goes down the middle. It is a very long bridge if you walk but we made it both ways. Our Apple watches are happy with us today!
First stop across the other side was the Arctic cathedral which is bright white and again looks like it has a leaning domino problem. We didn’t go in as we had pre-bought cable car tickets so we headed there instead. More walking!
We’d been keeping an eye on the low lying cloud which had been clinging to the mountain that we were heading to all morning. With limited time though we headed
up and things cleared just as we got to the top so we quickly took some photos. It was never that clear again and, at times, all we could see was cloud. The area up there was really nice and you could walk around amongst the grass and odd snow patches.
There were two peaks and we reached one with me sensibly dissuading Claire from dragging us up the other one as we would have missed our ship. Sometimes she listens to reason!
We went back down in the next cable car, wandered back to town and over the blimming long bridge again. Things were either too far away now or not worth paying to get in due to lack of time. Possibly more value for money than the quick drink in the aforementioned rock bar though!
After a quick sit out in the sunshine on deck Claire could’t be bothered to get changed for dinner so I ate too much in the buffet place instead. Well I had missed lunch!
