Dear All Greetings from London. Last week I got back from an epic five-and-a-half week adventure around the Nordic lands of Europe. As with my last trip around New England, I thought it best if this time I simply wrote notes as I travelled, and wrote up the proper blog entries upon my return home. This worked out well again this time, as again it meant I got to spend more time travelling and seei... Read Full Entry

Norway Begins .... the summer adventure.
Exploring new lands, the excitement begins and new knowledge and understanding unfolds. So, we will see lots of concrete in Oslo. I guess I'd never given much thought to what it would look like. If we get to Oslo next year we will go to the Nobel Peace Center and take the test. That will be fun to compare notes. I imagine it is similar to a Meyers-Briggs test. We've been to Giverny (Monet's home in France) it would be great to visit this location in Norway to link things together. I would not have thought about going to Ikea for lunch but it turned out well. I do hear the prices are awful in that part of the world. Your skill with languages is astounding. Maybe you should have gone into linguistics or become a translator.... you know... one of those people who knows 15 languages.

Norway
Thanks MJ! Yes, Oslo city centre very much felt like concrete without so much beauty. I definitely recommend a visit to the Nobel Peace Centre, and it would be interesting indeed to compare notes on our "Peace Personalities" 😊 In fact, I think it would be interesting to compare notes on the whole of our two journeys if you're able to make it there next year. I love Ikea food, and it definitely helped ease the pain in my wallet I felt for my whole five-and-a-half weeks there! I love learning languages, and once you've learned a few, it seems to get easier as they're all related really! 😊 I tried translation once and found it exhausting! I think I can just stick to speaking one language at a time, lol!

A very Monet-esque bridge I thought. I can see how it caught his eye.

The first stamp in a passport is such a good feeling
I am happy that you have broken in your new passport, and what a place to do it. It may have been boiling hot up on the opera house, but what a wonderful building it seems to be. I can't wait to read your next installment.

Passport Stamp
Thanks Brendan! You're right, it felt like an initiation rite for my new passport, and it is now an official Traveller's Passport 😊 Indeed, although boiling, the Opera House was definitely worth the climb. Thank you so much for reading my blog and following along 😊👍

A great start
Sounds like a great start to your adventures Alex! And very exciting to have a new passport to fill with stamps. I love getting new stamps and visas for my passport.

Passport Stamps
Thanks Lori! I also love stamps and visas in my passport, they've always been one of the great joys of travel for me! I'm so happy you are both travelling again too, I'm looking forward to reading more about it 😊

Memorial to the Scandinavian Star Disaster

I followed the news when that disaster unfolded
The day Scandinavian Star disaster happened I sat at home listening to the radio. The reports started saying that it was a small fire but it was under control and that there was no injuries. The next hour more news came through, now it was believed that there was two injured. One hour later: now the fire was no longer thought to be under control and one casualty and three injured were confirmed. Slowly, hour by hour, more news came and each time it got worse and worse. It felt unreal to listen to those news reports. /Ake

Scandinavian Star
I never knew about this disaster until I saw this memorial. It seems like one of those events where people remember exactly what they were doing when it happened though. It must have been big news in Sweden at the time. Very sobering.

Norway
What a beautiful country to visit and great timing in terms of getting away from the heatwave we had back home.

Norway
Indeed, it's so beautiful. It just seems like an undiscovered gem for us Brits - so close, yet so few seem to visit. Yes, I was very grateful to get away from the heat!

A Bit of Deja Vu
Alex, I have been putting off reading your blogs about Norway as I was just there in August myself. Thought I might finish my own blogs soon and wanted to compare places visited. However, since that didn't happen, I'm happy to be reading this one of yours and found it delightful as always! Looks like we would not have crossed paths as it seems we both saw different places!

Deja Vu
Oh wow, I didn't realise you were there around the same time as me. I'm so glad to read that you're travelling again, I imagine you had an amazing time! I'm looking forward to reading your blogs about your time there, and also comparing notes. What a beautiful country is Norway!
