Our second day in Oslo, well actually half a day, and I was on a mission to find and photograph some of the city's street art. The Visitors Centre yesterday had referred me to their website, where there was an interactive map with the location of various murals and details of the artist https://www.visitoslo.com/en/articles/urban-art-in-oslo So we set off towards Toyen, where the map showed quite a few murals were located. Along the way, we saw a few sculptures worthy of a photo, but unfortunately the urban art I was in pursuit of was difficult to locate and it didn't help when Google Maps decided not to co-operate either.
Rather than wander around aimlessly, we headed back into town and made our way to the Opera House. Our guide from the City Discovery Tour yesterday had recommended a visit here, and even if we didn't step foot inside, to make sure we walked on the roof. In Norway, climbing mountains is so natural, so why not climb buildings too. The architecture of this angular building represent a glacier floating in the waters of the Oslofjord . The roof is marble embellished and visitors are encouraged to walk on it. There are
signs warning of the slippery surface and to be cautious, and I did slip on some ice at one stage and went arse up - fortunately I didn't hurt myself😊
Next, we walked along the harbour promenade and spied a few of the sauna rafts. These are made from recycled materials and driftwood rescued from the fjord and the idea is that you have a refreshing dip in the fjord before hopping into a warm sauna. Unfortunately, we didn't see anyone having a dip during our walk, maybe it was too cold????
Continuing along the promenade, we ended up at SALT - a nomadic art project that brings together art, music, food and architecture. We had driven past a huge wooden pyramid yesterday with lots of towels hanging from it which I was fascinated by, so today we took a closer look. Created by Mikkal Aaland, it's called SWEAT and is a collection of loin cloths and towels that Aaland collected from around the world. Weirdly, lots of the towels feature naked or semi naked people so definitely catches your eye, which I believe is the intention.
Not long after, it was time to farewell Oslo and
start a new adventure in Bergen. Our flight with Scandinavian Airlines was only 50minutes, and I was happy to get a few photo's of the sun peaking through the clouds as I sat by window. Not long after, we started to rock and roll and you couldn't get me off the plane quick enough when we landed. The longest 50minutes of my life!!!
Met by a representative from Imagine Cruising, our group had now grown to fill two buses. Our stay for the night is at Hotel Terminus - known as Bergen's "Grand Old Lady", and is widely known for its whisky bar. After our check in, it was time to head out in search of dinner before having an early night.
