We arrived excitedly in the Achterhoek or also called Twente, which translated means " Behind the Corner" It,s Allans old stomping ground in his young years. It is a stone throw away from the German border. That is handy for the people that live around here. Diesel is cheaper in Holland, most food also, But spirits is better to buy in Germany, sometimes. The locals know exactly the tricks. We visited a castle in Bad Bentheim from the early 1100. It was destroyed, rebuild etc, through the years. It is fabulous maintained and the grounds used for Weddings as well. The paving of cobblestones and slabs is on various places original. No high heals here if you want to stay upright. The Saturday was used for a discovery tour of young Allan. Enschede,Hengelo and Delden were visited. They are all a stone throw away from e each other. In Hengelo Allan tried to reconstruct the streets where his parents had a Jewellery shop and lived. It was bombed away during the war and rebuild, that changed the centre completely. Unbeknown to us, a young man had been observing us when Allan stood there en pointed out this and that. He approached us and said if we were interested he could show us some of the old areas, which was housed in a building. We should follow him. Allan followed him but Liz tried to say to Allan, she was uncomfortable about that. Allan does not feel that easy of ease. He went on talking and than we arrived at the Council Chambers and produced a key. Security officers were also there, and by than Liz felt relaxed. The young man Dr. Mark Komen, who is an Archaeologist, recognised quickly that Allan knew a lot about the old city and had a good memory. He took us upstairs where a group of people were welcoming us. They were all associated with the Historic museum of Hengelo as Volunteers. It is nice to see the time they put in to try and save the Historic sites of Hengelo. As last place we had to visit Delden and the Historic castle of Twickel. This also dates back to early 1100-1200 hundreds. We always, as kids looked forward to the Sunday outings, when we biked from Hengelo to Delden and visited a recreation and playgarden called het Hoogspel. Talking with the people there, they remembered how it was in that time. Now there is a carpark there ,but nice to see that the a lot of the original building and the biljart table is still there. We certainly had a very nice time visiting here, but will have to move again soon. So till than Liz & Allan
