Geo: 36.0722, 14.2358A day trip to Gozo - simply not enough, but like most visitors to Malta on a blitz tour, it's all the time we could allow.  Though it's only about 1/3 the size of Malta, there are a ton of sights to cover, making for a whirlwind tour today.  These types of tour are never the greatest, with only token commentary, and leaving you a bit confused and exhausted at the end of the day, unsure of exactly where you had gone and what you had seen.  But we knowingly signed up for this, as it was still the most efficient way of hitting up the main Gozitan sights. The highlight was probably Ramla Bay, a beautiful red-sand beach that was wonderfully deserted by Maltese standards, at least during the late morning.  The only problem ... read more

Geo: 35.96, 14.36British pubs, fish and chip shops, the iconic British phone booths - walking around Valletta today was a bit of a trip to a parallel Universe, as we were magically transported to a tropical version of Great Britain. I've come across this many times, particularly in Spain's Costa del Sol and the Canary Islands, places essentially colonized by holidaymakers from the UK. I hate these places, as the holidaymakers have completely taken over, nearly obliterating all traces of the local culture. But a funny thing happened in Valletta today - it actually works here, and we liked it!Though Malta has also been taken over by holidaymakers, there is a distinct difference between the atmosphere here, and the aforementioned places. Since Malta was a British colony for 150 years, the two cultures have merged and ... read more

Geo: 35.91, 14.52Tears of gelato ... that's what we cried today, our last in Sicily, before returning to Catania to catch a flight to Malta, the final segment of our trip. But the profundity of our mourning was exceeded only by the joy of our belts, which for the past ten days, have been in a constant state of tension, under the same stress and pain that medieval prisoners must have felt when tortured on a rack. There is always balance in the Universe, so it is only fair that our suffering be balanced by some good ...Today marks the last of everything Sicilian on this trip - the first and last Sicilian cannoli, the last Sicilian pastries, the last gelato, the last granita, the last espresso, the last glass of fine wine blessed with the ... read more

Marsaxlokk is an acient fishing village which is located at the head of Marsaxlokk Bay. Old low-rise houses occupy along the whole waterfront, and a fleet of brightly coloured luzzu (Maltese fishing boats) crowds the habour. Not surprisingly, this place is renowned for its top-notch seafood restaurants. The most interesting thing here is the Sunday Fish Market. As the name suggests, the fish market only opens on Sunday, and yet in the morning until 12pm. How lazy they are! So, I needed to set aside some time for a visit. Finally I spent the whole morning in Marsaxlokk today. When I first got there, what I saw is a series of stalls on both sides of the main road selling daily accessories, toys, decoration.....When I continued walking, I can see the fish market. There are a ... read more

Yesterday we had another chilled day of reading books, splashing in the pool, going to the waterpark and eating lots of food. Today we are going home. I'm currently sitting on the plane after having been delayed for 2.5 hrs and I'm waiting for the stewardess to bring me some dinner :-) I've enjoyed Malta, the swimming pool and waterpark especially, but it has been a bit too touristy for me, mummy and daddy plus the food hasn't been great. Though I'm not sure i want to go home either - I'm looking forward to seeing my friends, but its cold, raining and as I'm 18 months old today I'm going to be potty training this week :-( Lucas x x... read more

Yesterday we spent more time just relaxing, swimming, eating and at the waterpark. Today has been quite different and wow its been hot, 42 degrees apparently! We caught a boat first thing over to a small island called Comino, where we spent a little while swimming in an area of the sea called the 'blue lagoon'. It was beautiful, clear blue water where I saw lots of little fish swimming. Unfortunately I also saw hundreds of other tourists and their boats in this small patch of water and on the rock face next to it :-( apparently there is a small beach, but I couldn't see this with all the deck chairs! Anyway, I loved the swimming and I got to watch mummy and daddy jump off the boat into the sea. It looked really fun ... read more

I have had a brilliant day - I went to my very first waterpark! This morning we just spent time next to and in the swimming pool. I got to do lots of jumping in and rides/falls from my crocodile. I also made a new friend, a little girl called Rhianna from France I think. She's about 4 and played throwing the ball with me for ages! After lunch and my nap mummy and daddy took me to a waterpark that's on the waterfront at bugibba. They thought I might be a bit small, but I knew they were wrong :-) it was brilliant, there are lots of fountains and cannons and pipes that spray water, plus shower type tubes that water falls from and buckets that get you soaked if you go under at the ... read more

So I'm in Malta. We left Tuesday afternoon and arrived at the hotel in Bugibba at midnight. I had a fun day of riding my cousin Harry's trunki around Norwich airport, running around with a little girl I met there - she's my age and flying in a plane! I really liked looking out the window at all the clouds on this flight and the nice people at Thomas Cook even gave me a seat of my own :-) I wasn't so keen on the takeoff though, it was just SO noisy! Yesterday I spent the day playing in the hotel pools and the little play area. There is a big slide I like in there plus a castle playhouse. My cousin Evie would love it, it's a big castle and it's purple. Mummy and daddy ... read more

My grandmother grew up during the air raids on Malta in WW2, she immigrated to Australia from Malta in 1955 at the age of 13. During World War II, Malta became the most bombed place on earth. At the outbreak of World War II, Malta was Britain’s most important Mediterranean naval base. As such, it was to protect east-west supply lines while blocking the passage between Italy and North Africa. When Mussolini plunged Italy into the war on June 10, 1940, Malta knew for sure that it was destined to play a frontline role. Malta’s worst period of the war was in early 1942, when the air raids never ceased. In April alone, 6700 tons of bombs rained down on the island and on the 15th of that month a special message from the British king, ... read more

My last day in Malta called for more sightseeing. Over the day,I spent 6.5 hours on buses, 1 hour on ferries, and countless hours on my feet. And I only spend $9.10 euros for all. 8:00 am: I caught the bus to Marsaxlokk, a traditional fishing village, dating from the Phoenicians. It was about 45 minutes away, and has a weekly Sunday market. The market had the usual stuff, veggies, clothes, electronics, etc. A nice man was eating fuzzy green things off a bushy plant, and when I asked him what they were, he gave me a handful. The texture of a mushy nut, with out much flavor… they were garbanzo beans!!! <... read more
