What a celebration in a most beautiful setting. Richard and Catherine being married in Villa Rosa overlooking St Georges Bay. Family and friends were gathered from UK , Sweden Malta and Dubai. After welcome drinks the ceremony took place on the terrace with myself and Christer as witnesses signing away my son and his daughter in a happy union. At 5.30 pm as the sun shone down on us we were glad of the fans which had been provided for the ladies!! And so to greet and congratulate the bride and groom we wandered in the gardens by the pool ( 2 swans-not real ones-swimming happily around). Then we were seated for a gourmet 4 course dinner along with toasts of sparkly and lots of wine. The best man , Ben - a friend from uni ... read more

I remember sitting on the rooftop of my hostel in Santorini overlooking the Mediterranean in Greece one evening writing in my first travel journal that is now full, worn, nearly ruined by a jar of melted coconut oil and was once lost about when I "found myself." This was a measly two weeks into my travels... Did I know at that time that my travels would go on for nine months? No, not at all. I would never have imagined such a timeline. I never had a clear answer for that question as people would ask all the time throughout my travels. I didn't realize that "I don't know" was such an abnormal answer. But, anyway, now I find myself here in Malta, on the hard rocks feet from the salty, warm waters of the Mediterranean ... read more

This morning the tour group rode to the south side of the island of Malta to see the World Famous Blue Grotto. I'm not sure how many Blue Grottoes there are in the world, but this is one of them. We didn't get to do the boat ride into the grotto or through the natural arch because the seas were too rough today, but we had a nice view from the cliff (see picture). Next we visited Mosta, which boasts a church with the third largest unsupported dome in the world (see picture). From there we went to view the catacombs in Rabat (see picture). These catacombs are not nearly as extensive as the ones I have seen in Rome, but on the other hand, I was allowed to take pictures. Uncle Jim and I shared ... read more

Today the tour group visited Gozo. It is the second largest of the small archipelago that makes up the country of Malta. One gets there by boat and there is a ferry that runs frequently throughout the day (see picture). I was surprised how large the ship was and many people were on board. Lots of people going and coming from Gozo! We boarded a bus and rode to the megalithic ruins of Ggantija (see picture). Like the other ruins we saw yesterday, not much is known about the builders of these ancient structures, but it is something to imagine men moving these huge boulders before machines and even before metalworking. Our next stop was the cathedral. Nearly everyone in Malta is Catholic and there are two cathedrals, one on the island of Malta and one ... read more

We ate dinner last night at a local restaurant and I had rabbit, which is a national dish here. They call it "fenek". I'm sorry I don't have a picture of it, but take my word for it, it looks and tastes like chicken. I was a little disappointed because I expected a more exotic taste. This morning the group rode in a bus to the little fishing village of Marasxlokk. The locals still go out and fish in little boats (see picture) and each one has the Eye of Osiris on the bow to ward off evil (see picture). After Marsaxlokk (the "x" is pronounced like "sh" in Maltese), we visited the megalithic ruins of Hagar Qin (don't ask me how to pronounce that one). These temples were erected before Stonehenge and even before the ... read more

Today our 21-person group toured Valletta, the capital city of Malta. We walked down the main street which has been pedestrianized (see picture). This is good because there were a lot of tourists in town today, many off a large cruise ship (see picture) that we saw in the harbor. From a viewpoint overlooking the Grand Harbor we could see Fort St. Angelo on the opposite bank (see picture). The fort was built by the Knights of St. John and it withstood the siege of 1565 when the Ottomans attempted to take over Malta. The cannons in the foreground of the picture are 19th century English. The Maltese have been independent since 1964 but they still fire noon gun every day from this site. The English were still in control of the island during the second ... read more

Today was a travel day and I took no pictures. We arrived here in Malta from Tunis via Tunis Airlines. Sometimes it happens that the skies are clear enough during landing that I can pick out landmarks I have read about or seen pictures of. And so it was for Malta. We came in over the island of Gozo, the second largest of the small islands that make up the country of Malta. I was able to identify the main city, named Victoria after the queen. And on the island of Malta itself we flew right over Mosta, a small town with a huge domed church that is modeled after the Pantheon in Rome and thus is easily identifiable. We arrived at the hotel and met with the new tour director and the new members of ... read more

I am indeed lucky that two of my kids live in such lovely locations and so it was time to take a trip see Richard in Malta in November, this time in the company of my dear brother Trevor and Christine. Staying some nights at the Fortina Spa Hotel we had that amazing view of Valetta across the harbour from Sliema. There seem to be two opinions on Malta - a bit like Marmite , you like it or hate it. I can only thinks that those who hate it have had a most unfortunate experience ..maybe they had a bad hotel, bad weather, went to all the wrong places. This is my 4 th time there and each time I like it more... There is so much to do and explore from cruising the 3 ... read more

Lidl Welcomes You to Gozo. If ever there was proof that they are taking over the World, it is there staring you in the face as we enter Mgarr harbour - gateway to Gozo. There was no plan to take in Gozo during our stay on Malta, but that ever comprehensive bus network and bargain ticket had tempted us up to the top of the island. Mosta was the initial aim of the day, but the much vaunted Miracle of Mosta did little to hold our attention for more than 1/2 an hour. The Rotunda of Mosta sits in the centre of town and is without doubt a fine church in it's own right. The dome is the 3rd largest unsupported version in the world. The infamy of the building however stems from the attempts by ... read more
