Great Britain formally acquired possession of Malta in 1814. The island staunchly supported the UK through both World Wars and remained in the Commonwealth when it became independent in 1964. A decade later Malta became a republic. Since about the mid-1980s, the island has transformed itself into a freight transshipment point, a financial center, and a tourist destination. Malta became an EU member in May of 2004. To be updated

This is the view from my hotel room!
I'd forgotten how nice it is to travel during the week, when the flights are half empty, and you can spread out. I think everyone on the long flight from Toronto to Frankfurt had at least two seats to spread out on! It took planes, trains and automobiles to get here (a bus between terminals in Toronto and a train between gates in Frankfurt), but I'm here. The flight from Frankfurt to Malta was really cool, with glimpses of the Alps through the clouds, the Italian Coast, the blue waters of the Mediterranean, and beautiful Sicily below us. It's almost like [View Full Entry]

The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta (S.M.O.M), has the distinction of being the worlds smallest country. While some legal experts doubt its true sovereignty, it does have a small parcel of land (a little over an acre if I remember correctly), and issues its own passports, postage stamps, currency and license plates. I believe the quandary comes from the fact that while the country has citizens, it has no full time residents. Legal semantics aside, visiting the ‘country’ was cool. It is in Rome, and overlooks the Vatican. Here [View Full Entry]

"I couldn't possibly comment about Malta - just ask anyone who was there! Fantastic tour and genuine 4 star hotel. We paid our dues to the great drinker, Olly Reed, in the bar where he drunk himself to death (we were there on the 4th anniversary), went mad in jeeps (some of which were 3 wheelers!), played beach rugby and ate the finest kebabs ever." The Family in the backyard
a big feature of that weekend was sitting in the backyard of an evening sipping Cisk and chewing the fat
Ok then so what's been happening......well I've been doing some touristy things......I went to Malta for a weekend and caught up with Marita and Paul (sister & husband) as they basked in the last few days of their Grand European tour.....all good things have to end I suppose.....I also managed to see my relatives and grab some sun.....which was great. I suppose that given I had been in Europe 6 months, to not make it to Malta would have been a travesty. I, with Marita and Paul stayed with my Uncle Charlie (the King of Sleep), Aunty Rosie and cousin Natasha. [View Full Entry]
