Hello everybody, For my first time, I am getting information on the Soviet controlled countries. Lithuania is a good example. They were independant from 1918-40. At one point only their capital city was occupied by Poland--that was in 1920, but the rest of the country was independant. In 1938 the Soviets gave back Vilnius, but then moved in in 1940--35,000 Lithuanians were sent to Siberia. Fewer than half returned. From 1941-44 the Germans had it, but the Soviets were back in 1944. The Lituanians fought back, but were defeated. The got their independance in 1991, but the Soviets didn't give up easily--in an skirmish 14 people were killed and hundreds wounded. Gorbechev finally gave up after being pressured by other countries. It took until 1993 for the last Soviet to leave Lithuania. No wonder these people ... read more

Mes amingininos! We arrived in Lithuania yesterday after a "crazzzzzzzzy" time in Latvia. Andy and I have been trying to keep this journal as informative as possible. UNFORTUNATELY, we have pez size ...yep.... memories. So this is going to be more of a catch up entry to flesh out the details of our time in Estonia and Latvia. Estonia: Tallinn, which is located on the northern shore of the Baltic Sea in Estonia, was established as a trading settlement c. 9th century. It has a current population of 400 000 people. Estonian is the only official language, but Russian and English are very common. The level of english was what it was in Finland, but it was still decent and definitely better than my level of Estonian. Tallinn is considered one of the most progressive cities ... read more

And now the change of plans….I don’t know if I’d mentioned that I was planning to go directly to Moscow from the Ukraine or not, but that was the original plan. However, as I was sitting in Lviv and considering my options, I realized that about anything was a better option than a 33 hour train ride from Lviv to Moscow. Now if you look at a map, you’ll realize that Lviv is incredibly close to Poland; and if you travel north from Poland, it takes you to the Baltic states which then in effect connects to the Western-most part of Russia, namely St. Petersburg. Ah-ha, I think I have hit on something there. So to add a little spontaneity to my mundane traveling life (HA!), I decide to switch things up a little bit and ... read more

Country Count: 35+2! Rides: Parnu to Riga: One motorhome all the way to the centre of Riga. Riga to Vilnius: Two cars, one truck and a Lexus! Weather - Sun! We've had sun! At last! You meet strange people on the road. While we were standing on the road outside Parnu waving our "RIGA" sign at passing traffic, an older gentleman with long white hair came up to us, asked us where we were going, gave us a photocopy of an article about himself from a German newspaper, and then stood 15 metres behind us with a large "BERLIN" sign. We all ended up getting a lift in the same motorhome, and spent the next 2 or 3 hours discovering that we had the privelege of meeting Germany's most famous hitch hiker. He has been travelling ... read more

technically no longer in Vilnius but I figure that since i just got here in Warsaw that I would tell you about my time there. I would have to say that it's not as good as Riga, but only because the place I stayed wasn't as nice. I would still have to say that its a good time, though. Beer is really cheap and I had a filet mignon dinner with two beers and a dessert for like 12 dollars! Went to a small town about 30 min away called Trakai. Really great little town with a castle in the middle of a lake. The castle was kinda lame, the Russians destroyed it in the 17th century and then the soviets rebuilt it in the 60's, so not really an authentic castle. I guess that i'm ... read more

Vilnius, city of cobbled streets and numerous churches. Architecture from every influence; Gothic, Romantic, you name it it's here. Watch the world go by outside one of the delightful cafes in the old town. Gaze in amazement as impossibly tall thin women manage to negotiate the cobbled streets wearing impossibly tall thin heeled shoes (even in winter) I arrived here on a wet and cold evening, and found my apartment, which was tucked away in a typical old-town location, narrow cobbled street and tall building. I'd reccommend picking up a copy of the now essential In Your Pocket guide, at 5 litas. There are other guides given out free of charge along the same lines as In Your Pocket such as Exploring Vilnius, which can be found in hotel lobbies and tourist information centres. The whole ... read more

E-mail sent almost a year ago, has the combo of pictures, text and Country info at the bottom. This is the same one, but with a bit more info. The other message randomly sent itself before I was done. Greeting from Kliapeda, Lithuania. Klaipeda is the third largest city in the country, is on the coast, and will be my hometown for the next four months. Since this is the first news of my trip I have been able to send out, let me backtrack a bit. The flight in was nice, and staff greeted me right at baggage claim when I arrived in Vilnius (always nice when one arrives in the middle of nowhere and things go as planned.) The couple of days we spent in Vilnius were very nice. It had snowed for the ... read more

So it happened again - events and things happened quickly and the blog suffered. The blog ceased to exist - so here I am writing about 5 weeks after the events (again). Vilnius lies in the mainly flat and forested countryside of Lithunia, situated close to the Russian border in the South-East of the country. Founded in the 1320's by Duke Gediminas after a dream the city has lots of historic buildings, and statues. The old town is bigger than that found in either Tallin or Riga, and has a more open rambling feel than either of the other two baltic capitals, but has narrow streeted ghettos and archways in aboundance. Wednesday I decided to stay at the old town hostel - though to be honest it is the only centrally based hostel in the city. ... read more
