Everything went very smoothly as it was a carbon copy of last year. The weather was really hot and we were expecting rain (as per the forecast). Setting up the bikes was a breeze and the Novotel staff were great. Went for a quick trip up town with Nick and John and the heavens opened. Felt tired and glad that I didn't have to ride my bike that day...not sure how we did that last year - I've been up since 2am! Trepidation for tomorrow as it's a new route and we are cycling 102 miles on our first day.... read more

We had a very early start this morning. We had breakfast at 07:00 and were on the road for 07:50 heading out of Kaunus and south. The starter was a real wake up call, firstly over a load of cobbled roads and secondly up a fairly steep hill away from the river that runs through Kaunas. Then we entered some typical country roads with gentle climbs heading for the Baltic Highlands where Vilnius resides. We had about 90+ miles to cover today and needed to be in Vilnius for 17:00. The day started well and got better, we made excellent time and with regular breaks had soon put 30 miles under our wheels. This ensured we pasted Preniai very quickly and headed out on the A16. We hit the highlands with a vengence after about 30 ... read more

Day 5 saw us head south east from Taurage, bypassing Quinlan Corner (the new Accident Blackspot) by a few miles and angling down towards Jurbarkas near the Lithuanian / Russia border. The first 2 hours of cycling was mostly through heavily wooded areas and our feet were a little heavy following the Officer's Mess hospitality of the previous night. However we made reasonable time south and decided to stop in at the small town of Smalininkai, which sits on the river between Lithuania and Russia, before deciding to make a small side trip to the border crossing at Burgaiciai for a quick photo opportunity. After which we then headed back to the 141 towards Kaunas and started to eat up the miles. Today was a long day of over 85 miles of cycling in 23+ C ... read more

So here we are. The journey out was pretty smooth. The flight was about 50 mins late taking off. Arrived in Vilnius to a very warm welcome with tradditional bread and a yoghurt / sour milk drink. Putting the bikes back together went quite smoothly with minimal / no damage to the bikes and bags. There was a slight panic at the airport when the carousel stopped and the shutters came down with 3 keen men waiting for luggage left standing scratching their heads, but the belt started up again and the bikes came out to everyones great relief, well done wizzair. Once we had been welcomed and had a bite to eat at Barclays head office in Green Hall we set off. An initial few hills soon levelled out to become a steady ride to ... read more

Very early start 2:30am! Everything went relatively smoothly at airports though there was a definite OMG moment when the luggage conveyor stopped and we were the only ones waiting for our gear...10 minutes later and we were sorted. Two straps broken and a small hole in my bike bag. Had a great welcome from over 20 people outside the Barclays building, Green Hall and managed to get all the bikes set up in record time. A few speeches and a quick pizza lunch and we were off. A couple of the Lithuanians joining us took us through Vilnius on the cycle routes which were a little bumpy and I was desperate for the open road...we had a full escort in the form of a car in the front driven my colleague Vitas and a van driven ... read more

Budapest, Hungria, 30 octubree 2öö8. Saludos. Omar Velásquez Manzo.... read more

In keeping with our desire to see a national park in each country, we’d mentally marked down this as the day to make a trek out to Aukstaitija National Park. However, at the last minute we chickened out of the 2-hour bus trip that would drop us several km away from the park, and decided to visit Trakai National Historic Park instead, a preserve on a peninsula that was a mere 40-minute train ride out of town. With two castles, a ton of lakes, and an obscure sect of Judaism calling it home, we figured it would be the perfect fit, and if we could manage to catch the 7:45 AM train, we might even make it back by early afternoon. We got up early and booked it to the train station, making it there with ... read more

Wandering re-establishes the original harmony which once existed between man and the universe. ~Anatole France May 11, 2009, Monday, Trakai to Vilnius, Lithuania, “A Problem Day… Somedays are just not easy”, or “The Day Kel almost lost it”. As the rain came down, we parked and rushed to the bus, but we didn’t have the correct amount. (Why would the price change from yesterday?) Maureen rummaged through her purse and paid the additional amount, we took a seat. Ten minutes later, Maureen can’t find her wallet? PANIC sets-in as every article of clothing is being searched. As we arrive in Vilnius, the wallet is found. Chapter II On to the next problem, today we plan to leave laundry at the hotel, but we are late for the pick-up. They “MAY” come back. We leave the ... read more

hey guys, currently killling time in the hostel awaiting my overnight bus to Warsaw, Poland. But the last 36 hours have been spent in lil old Vilnius. First arrived and with my dutch mate we explored the city, which (by my reconning) has 1 church for every 5 people. The most numerous by far considering the population is only a mere 400,000. So slightly bigger than Adelaide, but with less churchs. But these are the most animated by far - anyway enough on churches. The rest of the old town is larger than talinn and Riga that I have been to recently and it also seem to have a good combination of modern and old. Lots of bars, lots of cafes also. Made the mistake of ordering a hot chocolate and got a melt bar of ... read more

As i was telling you i spent my last month in a place called Druskininkai. south of Lithuania very close to the Belorussian border, sometimes our phones were telling us that we are in Belarus..So one month there i was spending my time having a "working vacation" after one full year, so i was there as "camp instructor" and "English teacher". The best part out of it is that i had a lot of fun, i met new people and made new friends some maybe even more than friends, i discovered people that become very close to me and now that the camp is over i miss them. For 4 weeks i had the chance to be child again, and to do things as i used to some time ago....sure...my clothes are all...destroyed...but now i ... read more
