Background: Independent between the two World Wars, Lithuania was annexed by the USSR in 1940. On 11 March 1990, Lithuania became the first of the Soviet republics to declare its independence, but Moscow did not recognize this proclamation until September of 1991 (following the abortive coup in Moscow). The last Russian troops withdrew in 1993. Lithuania subsequently restructured its economy for integration into Western European institutions; it joined both NATO and the EU in the spring of 2004.

I decided to go and check out the website for the Bois-Guillaume Woodchucks, the team with which I was playing towards the beginning of the season for two months. I had seen on the French website that they were falling in the standings, in fact I am not sure that they have won a game since I left France. So I just wanted to check in. The front page of their website was an account of a meeting team officials had had with the Mayor of Bois-Guillaume followed by an open letter explaining the bleak situation of baseball in Bois-Guillaume. Apparently [View Full Entry]

The Last Moose in Kaunas

 Europe » Lithuania » Kaunas
I went to Akropolis, the mega-mall here in Kaunas, to see the film ‘La Vie En Rose’, a film about Edith Piaf, the famous French singer from the early 20th century. I went to the film with Jolanta, my girlfriend’s sister. And it was on our ride home that Jolanta told me the story of the last moose in Kaunas…… Not so long ago there were many deer and moose that lived in the forest across the highway on the outskirts of Kaunas. Viktorija and Jolanta grew up on Asygilys Street, a street that parallels highway A1, the main highway in [View Full Entry]

For the past two months I have been working at a summer camp called Mercurijaus, which is in a small village about 15 kilometers northwest of Kaunas. I have been working as a ‘sporto vadovas,’ or, (sports) camp counselor, teaching baseball to a group of around 20 kids for two hours each day. The camp is smaller than summer camps I have been to the US……it is situated in the woods on about 10 acres of land……but each week it attracts anywhere from 300-400 campers. As many things I have experienced in Lithuania, this summer camp is just like summe [View Full Entry]

Lituanica vs Vilnius U.

 Europe » Lithuania » Kaunas
Today we played a doubleheader against a University team from Vilnius. We were small in number—only Shaq, Kisa, Marijus, Draugas, Yagi, Gedas, and myself were playing from the first team. The team was filled out by Simas, a player for the second team, and Edgaris, who plays for the Senior League team. Nevertheless, we won 19-0 and 23-0. Both games were stopped after five innings because of the 10-run slaughter rule. In the second inning, Marijus Dargus, who is arguably our best pitcher and, before his knee injury and surgery, one of our best hitters, hit a shot to right field& [View Full Entry]

We discovered today that ever since we entered Lithuania we have been living out of sync with the rest of the nation, by one hour that is. Finally it dawned on me today as a big digital clock in a town suggested that the time was exactly one hour later than what I presumed it was. Funny indeed, as for over a week we had been going around indignant that shop keepers would shut their shops one hour early (just for the sake of it obviously), and that buses did not behave according to their timetables. It had even gone so [View Full Entry]

What a great start into the day!
Day 11 of our journey, and the legs are starting to feel tired. A good thing that the road out of Druskininkai is absolutely perfect: sheltered from the wind, flat, and the sun is not too hot. On our way out of Druskininkai, we get lost once again (as we did on the way out of pretty much every single larger town). Two Lithuanian women, dressed up in their fancy car, offer to not only help us find the way, but drive with us to make sure we find it. Once they made sure we found the right junction, we have [View Full Entry]
