viva italia

The ferry ride from Corsica to Sardenia was a bit rocky but a beautiful way to say goodbye to the stunning coast line of Corsica and say hello to the beautiful coast of Sardenia...sunshine as well 😊 We arrived in Sardenia after the 1 hour ferry ride in a small town called Santa Teresa. A cute little town, and already you could see the change from France in the buildings with different bright colours on the building walls! Sadly my years of learning Italian in primary school did not come back to me but lucky Jean's muliti-lingualism came in handy again! Also the beauty of the euro and not having to change currency came handy in the bakery we visited to pick up some nice italian bread! Our stay in Sardenia would be short but we got to see some of the beautiful island during our bus trip to Oblia where were would take the ferry that night to mainland Italy. We passed through some cute small villages and already could see a change in the landscape from its neighbour Corsica...in the way villages were set up and also the vegetation in the country side. We arrived in Oblia and quickly

learnt that Italians like their shoes...with almost every second store in this town selling shoes! That night took the ferry to Civittivecchia, a port town just north of Rome.

We arrived in Civittivecchia at about 5am and after a bit of a sleepless night...thanks to some powerful snorers in seats nearby! We hopped on a train and headed for a pit stop in Rome which was about 1.5 hrs away. The big city was a bit of a shock to the system after spending quite a few weeks in the country side and in small villages! We planned on camping but when we got off at the central railway of Rome we headed for a hostel as we wanted to try pack in as much of Rome into one day! Rome struck me a quite an amazing city...a nice blend of ancient old and new modern in terms of architecture and people! We headed out first to check out the Colloseum and the old ruins near by. Its quite an amazing building and quite sticking as it is just in front of you when you get off the metro! It is quite surreal and a bit hard to image

what it would have been like in the Roman times...especailly with the masses of people, tour guides trying to get you to join their tour and people dressed as old Romans asking you for photographs. After the masses of people here we walked a bit more and stumbled upon a gorgeous little area filled with cute little streets, restaurants, cafes, shops and beautiful old houses. We got some amazing sandwiches at a deli/bakery and continued to explore this amazing city and all the randomness of ancient walls and ruins in different parts of the city! In the afternoon we headed to see the Vatican and the very grand big church and that night we checked out the amazing Trevi fountain and old Pantheon and other amazing buildings as well as having our 2nd amazing gelato for the day!

The next day was a bit overcast and drizzly and we headed out of Rome to Pescassaroli in the Abruzzo mountains and national park. The park is home to bears, wolves and the chamios and in the winter turns into ski slopes. It was a gorgeous bus ride towards the town passing through mountains and valleys, small villages and seeing the

amazing colour of the trees in the amazing colour of the carpet the leaves created on the ground! We were anticipating the cold...we all the school kids of the bus wearing big thick jackets! When we got off the bus we were greeted by the chilly wind and the overcast sky! We headed to a camping ground and opted to stay in a heated cabin as our tent was not going to block the cold air of the snow topped mountains! The next day we woke up to a gorgeous blue sky and sunshine 😊 We went for a nice walk up the mountain in the afternoon and at the top got some great views of the surrounding mountains with beautiful fresh snow tops. We enjoyed the fresh chilly air, saw some passing clouds and got a good view of the village below and the next 2 villages down the road!

The following day it was hard to beleive the day we had before becasue it was cold overcast and drizzling again...we could see more snow had fallen in the mountains overnight. A walk was a bit out of the question as we did not have good gear for

walking in the rain...so we hibernated in our warm cabin in while we were watching a film we saw the snow start to fall outside! For me this was quite a novelty with the only other time I had seen it snowing was back in Threadbo when we went skiing when I was 16yrs old! I was quite amazing to see the snow falling and the kid inside me ran outside to feel the snow fall from the sky 😊 It snowed, rained, hailed and sleeted for the rest of the day and night and you could see the mountains faintly behind the clouds covered in more white and the surround cabins and campsite covered in a layer of white snow!

We left the next day to the snow falling quite a lot and felt lucky that we had both seen the snow and also enjoyed their last sunny day before the winter! We didn't really know where were were headed...apart from towards Bari the ferry port which we needed to be in 2 days. After a day of buses, trains, lots of waiting we arrived at Termoli on the east coast at about 10pm at night. We had

found a place to camp...which was open...yipee! but the prob was it was about 9km from Termoli and no bus there...so we figured we would have to get a taxi...ok cool...becasue we would be at a campsite next to the beach away from the main town. anyway after finding that taxis have a closing time here...we decided to walk there??? so after about 3hrs and a few french swear words from jean and a few tears from me...we made it to the campsite...pitched the tent, had a cup of tea and went to sleep. The next day was the reward...to wake up slowly and relax close to the beach!

The next day we were on the move again to catch the ferry...this time were were super lucky and hitched a ride into town where were got the bus and train (along with our clothes we had washed and dryed throughout both trips!). We got the ferry in Bari on a small old school ferry with interiors to match 😊 I got stamped out of Europe as we were heading to Croatia...
