We travelled by bus, then Vaporetta to the Island of Venice today to spend the entire day exploring this unique place.

We began with a scenic gondola ride through the Venetian canals and were serenaded by an Italian singer accompanied by a piano accordion player. We then had a walking tour of some of the most famous sights, including the spectacular St Mark’s Bascilica. We then watched a glassblowing demonstration with awe. The glass blowing master make an ornate vase in just a few minutes. It apparently takes 18 years to become a master. We had an opportunity to buy some opulent Murano glass, before having some free time to explore for ourselves the many canals, narrow laneways and quaint shops. This gave us the opportunity to buy jewellery, postcards, Venetian masks and lace.

In the afternoon, most of the group took an optional excursion to the nearby Island of Burano with it’s picturesque painted houses.
