I desided not to take up the girl from the conferences offer to take me down to Spolleto and the coast line. As much as it was tempting and I may even regret it later, I really wanted to forge my own ground and discover Italy on my own terms. For better or worse this is my trip my way.
Perugia has vary little tourism compared to other cities Ive been to in Italy. This is great because I get to see the real Italy, especially since my hostel is in the middle of middle class urbia and not in the tourist historical part. The only downside is that very few people speak English making it a bit of a lonely expiriance. Not to worry though. Ive made friends with the local pigions. I must re-watch the movie "Cast Away" with Tom Hanks because I think I have a deeper understanding of how sad it was when he lost his friend the soccer ball. Serisously though, the city is very fasinating and has many pre-Roman and midieval places to discover. It is the only city I have ever seen where the older structure are higher then the
new structures. This is because midieval people actually dug out the hill to make it steeper.

I made a good choice to stick it out in Perugia. The Umbria Jazz Festival started today and it was such a nice change from the whole "Oh look here is yet another cathidral or precious work of art". The festival is a nice small venue but with some pretty big names such as BB King, Chip Wilson, Steely Dan and loads of others. Heres my funny story from today. I was sitting watch the free out door concert and this guy came and stood in front of me blocking my view. Some guy who were sitting beside me started talking in Italian and then got up and went over to this guy and his friend and I thought they were going to ask him to move out of our way but instead they asked to take a picture with him and then a bunch out other people started asking for pictures and autographs. As soon as one group was finished and the guy would start watching the band another group would get brave enough to go ask for a
picture or autograph. Clearly the guy was a somebody and even mor eclear was the fact that he just wanted to enjoy the show like everyone else. I sat right there in he view and shared a few smiles with him before he finally retreated. It was only later on when I meet this English guy who told me he came to see one band and one band only and that was Steely Dan who was his Idol. After realizing that Im completly stupied when it come to Jazz, he showed me a picture and like a fool I blurted out (I had had a few drinks by then) "Hey! Thats the guy that was standing here earier today!" Well the guy went through the roof when he found out that he had missed his idol be 15 minutes and I didnt even take one picture. Well what do I know. Besides as I said it was clear that the guy really wanted to just enjoy the show. So theres my story. I was close to fame and did nothing LOL. I had a great time and I really wish I could stay for the rest of the Festival but
I leave for Rome tomorrow.
