It is cold here, it snowed today, but the natural terrain and the good upleep of the old town areas makes it gorgeous. Bad busstation labeling makes us angry, but nothing so bad that a bar or lindor wont fix. We were in Siena, climbed a tower and could see at least 160 degrees of terain with no Highways, scaffolding, cranes or anything of the sort, we sat there for 20 mins and only left because of hte cold. Looking foarward to comeing home and Skiing (hows the season coming along?). Tomorrow we check out the Roman Forum, then its off to Pissa to check out the leaning tower etc, then Florence a couple days after. Saw a bagillion pictures of jesus (and statues), and today sqaure urns that all look the same. Went to a ... read more

Yesterday was a great day. We started out with a downhill ride from Volterra to a nearby tourist town, and took a shuttle back to the hotel, which meant that I had plenty of time for the hot tub, suana and "emotional showers". Emotional showers are showers, but with multiple sprayers, colored lights and piped-in music. You set a program and they blast you with alternating hot and cold water from various directions while the lights change color. To get their full effect, though, I think one would have to drop acid. At 4:30, the group headed up into the old city where a dutch tourguide gave us an excellent review of Volterra - and I kicked myself for forgetting my camera. Volterra was originally founded by the Etruscans some time before 500 BC and then ... read more

By popular demand, here's a map of our ride from Siena to Volterra (no altitude markings, alas): url="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=siena,+italy+&ie=UTF8&ll=43.357138,11.14975&spn=0.448325,0.925598&z=10&om=1" target="_blank"http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=siena,+italy+&ie=UTF8&ll=43.357138,11.14975&spn=0.448325,0.925598&z=10&om=1 San Gimignano was one of the beautiful towns along the way. -Eric... read more

The longest and hardest ride of the trip was today as we rode from Siena to Volterra. Roughly 90 km and 4 MAJOR climbs, the last into the old city of Volterra. I don't even want to think about that climb (which came with a soul-crushing headwind) until I post the pictures. And right now I'm writing from the slowest computer still in existence, so I'm not going to elaborate for the moment. Suffice it to say that the massage this evening was heaven. More later, Eric... read more

Bongiorno, we are back.. Our first full day with the group. We had a great opening dinner last night getting to know each other in the village restaurant. We had polenta with mushroom, stuffed rabbit, lamb with tomatoes and wine of course. The espresso at 10 was a mistake as it kept me awake for some time. The villa has a view opening to vineyards below the town of Castellina and is very beautiful and picturesque. It is fenced off to stop the wild boars from eating everything! Today we walked through the hills and valleys and in neighbouring towns such as Panzinni, Lamole, and Greve. We had the obligatory stop for coffee lattes, and we've ended the afternoon with lemon and caramel gelatos. Wine tasting might happen before our dinner back in the village tonight. ... read more

I woke up this morning and showered in yet another amazing bath with a view of the gorge. Frankie’s parents and a family friend had rented a small, stone villa and we had invited ourselves to stay in one of the guest rooms for five days of rent free Tuscan sightseeing. The house was built into the side of a hill, near the medieval walled Tuscan town of Volterra. The town was so near, if you listened closely at the top of the hour, you could hear the church bells toll. The only way to reach the house was via a long, steep, narrow, gravel driveway with hairpin turns and sheer drop-offs at each bend. Thou beautiful, just thinking of the driveway gave me vertigo. The property was terraced, planted with a mix of olive, cyprus ... read more
