Out of all the stops on this journey, I believe Jake and I overlooked Florence the most. Probably because it is near the end of our journey and squeezed between two giants (Cinque Terre and Rome), but nevertheless our uninspiring expectations of the city were exceeded! Florence is a city where there is not a lot to do, but a lot to see. By this I wish to stress that our highlight memories are the images of such a quaint and beautiful city. By far our most unique choice of accommodation (well besides of course the manyatta), our campsite in Florence was outstanding. Camping in a big city? Strange I know, but so refreshing and cheap. Campaggio Michelangelo is located near the Piazalle Michelangelo, which is on a hill overlooking Florence. Every morning when we stepped outside our tent we were pleasantly greeted with a panoramic view of Florence. A perfect escape from the crowds below.
When we arrived in Florence Wednesday afternoon we decided to simply enjoy the view and then spend some time wandering. We ended the night watching the sunset on the bank of the river that runs along the edge of Florence. When you travel as long
as we have you begin to realize that although the “must sees” (like the Mona Lisa for instance) are fabulous, it is the little moments that leave a more lasting impression. When you are completely absorbed in a quiet moment, at peace with your world, yet inspired by your current local, you are given the opportunity to just sit back and soak it all in. These are the moments I enjoy most and what Jake and I have learned to strive for.
On Thursday’s agenda we had two items - first a “must see”, David, and second a stroll though Florence- wherever that might lead us. The Galleria Accademia (where Micheangelo’s famous David statue resides) has a small unassuming entrance on a side street in Florence. The small gallery holds no other significant masterpieces so after a quick meander through the other rooms we reached the imposing statue of David. We have found that many masterpieces in Europe do not live up to their expectations in size and beauty that you see in photos. David is definitely an exception to this statement. Its grand and magnificent presence is something not to be missed on an art checklist in Europe. After
about thirty minutes of starring at the artistic genius in awe we headed out to explore the city. Well, just after Jake snapped a photo of David that he wasn’t supposed to and I got in trouble for it. Of course as it was lunchtime it is time for a food highlight- a grilled eggplant and mozzarella sandwich that was delicious! However, it was unfortunately followed by a run in with our first bad gelato experience. (When you eat gelato everyday for the twelve days you are in Italy I guess you are bound to encounter one gelato flavor that is not quite up to par.) Now with full bellies we wandered the city taking in the sights. Our day ended watching the sunset from Piazalle Michelangelo over a beautiful city… one of the little moments I mentioned earlier.
Friday was our last day in Florence and our last day of the trip with it being just the two of us. (We would be meeting Cayla and Megan in Rome the next day.) The day started with a walk to Piazalle Pitti and a trip to the famous Duomo. The inside of the church was astounding and the dome was
one of the grander pieces of architecture I have seen thus far in Europe. Having done about one or two museums in each of the large cities we have traveled to we decided to pass on Uffizi (a popular art museum). Instead we prepared for an incredible meal at a restaurant recommended by Jake’s aunt. Aunt Lori, although I have not yet met you… THANK YOU… hands down our best meal of the trip! Fagioli is an incredible Italian eatery with amazing food. We shared a plate of lemon and ricotta ravioli along with a calamari and spinach dish that was to die for! The meal began with bruschetta and ended with a pear and apple torte… a complete gastronomical experience that my taste buds will never forget. It was Jake’s treat and a perfect night out to end the “Jake and Lauren” two-month stint of the trip. Saturday morning we woke up early, excited to board the train to Rome and meet our two lovely friends Cayla and Megan!
