Yesterday we decided to take a break, staying home to catch-up on housekeeping chores, laundry, etc., and to give our aching legs a break. Dee performed her usual magic by preparing a light lunch of pizza and salad, and later prepared chicken coquettes with risotto and salad for dinner. We tried to hit the sack earlier than usual, but both of us were wide awake by 3 AM, struggling mightily to stay in bed for a couple more hours of sleep. Our plan for today was to visit Castelmola, the medieval town near Taormina that sits atop a craggy hill, 1,736 feet above sea level. We left the apartment shortly before 10 AM, under partly cloudy skies; rain was in the forecast, but it did not materialize. After descending our "65-stairsteps-from-hell", we waited at the nearby ... read more

After a late-morning start, our first order of business today was to walk from our apartment to the public bus terminal on the other side of town, where we'll be taking several excursions next week. The tours depart at 7 AM, and our concern is whether we can manage to reach the station, which is about a mile away, in time to catch the bus. In fact, it turned out to be a longer and slower "slog" than anticipated, with several stretches of roadway without sidewalks, and it took us more than 30 minutes to reach the station. So we'll probably need to arrange for taxis on those days. From the bus station we continued walking to reach the Villa Comunale (Parco Duca di Cesarò), a beautiful public garden created by Lady Florence Trevelyan in the ... read more

Despite being awake for 24-hours-plus, sleep did not come as easily as we expected last night, so neither of us got more than five or six hours of shuteye. No doubt it will take a few days for our systems to adapt to the time change, but otherwise we awoke in good spirits without much of a travel "hangover". After one of Dee's delicious bacon and egg breakfasts, we were eager to do some exploring. It was a chilly 45 degrees at sunrise, but temperatures reached the upper 50s under clear, blue skies as the day wore on; ideal walking weather! We were out the door by 10 AM, walked through a small park that abuts our residence, and then located the series of sixty or so stairs descending to reach the main drag of Taormina, ... read more

Our 78-day journey began shortly before noon yesterday, as we flew from Daytona Beach (via Atlanta) to JFK in New York, where we boarded an overnight flight to Rome. The final flight from Rome to Catania, Sicily, touched down around 2:00 PM local time today, with a pre-arranged taxi service driving us the last 40 miles or so to our final destination in Taormina. With four separate legs to begin this odyssey, the connections in JFK and Rome were a little tricky, but all went well---even my lovely companion, aka "Airport Anxiety Annie" (see Dee's comments below), managed to stay on an even keel throughout the airport ordeals. Security screening was a breeze in Daytona, thanks to TSA Pre Check, and in Rome we were able to take advantage of a fast-track security check through Alitalia ... read more

That week went really quick! Caught the city circut bus to the port & walked around the waters edge & then cut back through to find some antique markets. Many stall holders and a fantastic assortment of goods for sale....hundreds of people. We jumped on the city circut bus again & got off at the Cattedrale. Being Sunday the whole town was out...I'm sure of it.....more streets were blocked off to traffic and pedestrians only allowed...oh and some handbag dogs. I can't get over how proud the Italians are about their appearance! We enjoyed strolling with the locals for the morning as it was easy underfoot today. Home to pack up ready for the next move....supposed to be thunderstorms... read more

Europe » Italy » Sicily » Monreale September 28th 2017

A bit slow off the pace today but we thought we would endeavour to bus to Monreale as the weather forecast was still threatening thunderstorms...(which never arrived). Two buses connected us to Monreale, the second was to be 10-15mins later, however that ened up being 1hour later (yes we waited for it). So we finally made it on a journey that was supposed to be 30mins but took 1hour....now we know there was an ernormous traffic jam....it just shuts the city down for hours.. Monreale was lovely, a hilltop village with fantastic views back over Palermo to the coast. The Cattedrale is one of the three UNESCO heritages, this one of Norman origin & Byzanntine influence from 1172. 25 degrees so a pleasant day walking through the streets & little markets. Today in Palermo starts the ... read more

Love our place...it has five rooms...we could actually lose sight of each other... A lovely bottle of Sicilian wine & biscotti welcomed us last night. Today we headed into the Teatro Massimo centre for info gathering & a wander. Their info centres here are just great for anything you need to know....one Sicilian lady & maps & timetables later we left with a nice experience of being very welcome.. Viap Maqueda area has some quite fascinating architecture dating from 1140. Love the faces in the advertising photo! A little more grocery shopping & home for the afternoon.. 6.15pm we headed out before dark & made our way to Teatro Massimo to catch the City Circut bus, all the street lights coming on & most monumental places lit up. Complete circut was 50mins & there was often ... read more

For some reason....for which I can't remember...we had to arrange our flight from Napoli to Catania and that is, not to Palermo which was our destination. We have stopped in Catania before today and taken the fantastic train trip between Palermo and Catania & thought this would be easy done to get us to our dedtination. The train trip was fabulous (3hours €13 ea) the scenery was beautiful & on up through Enna. Very dry & many crops just finished so the land being tilled...the dark tilled soil fields in total colour contrast to the dry hay fields. Our trip entailed 1 walk, 1 train, 1 bus, 1 plane, 1 bus,1 train, 1 bus, 1 walk...we knew exactly what we were doing....we really did! Home on the 4th floor (with lift) in the business centre part ... read more
