This week I was able to walk around town more and learn my way around the streets better. I have been able to search around the Duomo area in more depth as well as being able to get around the area called Romolo (which is where Mark lives and where a lot of students live) and Brerra, which is a strange area inhabited by gypsies (they come out at night and tell fortunes on the streets, along with people who gamble at tables that get set up on the streets). Brerra was also the place we went to watch the super bowl. To see the super bowl, we went to a club named fiori oscuri, which is a posh nightclub frequented by models most nights, and is owned by a guy from New Mexico. It was interesting since the bar was packed with Americans from midnight (a little before the game started our time) to 4:30 am. Danny the owner was also serving hamburgers and giving away hotdogs, which was just a final reason the night was out of the ordinary.
On the night of Saturday the 3rd, I went to Mark’s apartment for a party that was supposed to
be like a party an American college student would have. I don’t know why we did this, since we are still basically college students and we are from America, but we did anyway. The party was fun, but sadly all of the pictures were blurry, as you can see. Also the pictures of the graffiti are from near Mark’s apartment and basically outside of the Romolo metro stop, which is where I get off to go to Mark’s. One night I was also propositioned in inappropriate ways by a large man in a tiny smart car. I was terrible and luckily my cab came just in time for me not to have to deal with the situation anymore.
As for the sights I have seen on my walks through the town, the picture of the tiny gas station is just one example of interesting things. But if you cannot tell, that gas station is in a small section cut out of the base of an office building and one side is only big enough for motorcycles while the other is supposed to be for cars, but it was not much bigger than the motorcycle side. My other favorite moment
from when I was walking around was seeing the Italian street clown making balloon animals for kids. Apparently, not much changes from culture to culture, even when “Mario” (lets just say for humor) the clown is handing out balloon hearts while everyone walking around him is wearing only the most fashionable clothes and are shopping in one of Italy’s most well-known areas for its designer shops, there is something funny about that. The clown was standing outside of the open air (but roof covered) shopping area named the galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Although it is only about the size of a city block it is interesting because of the glass ceilings above, and dome at the center of the roof. I also saw the USA shop, I didn’t go inside, which I now regret, but it seemed like a normal tourist shop that was either for people from the USA or for Italians to finally get all of that USA gear they had been wanting and couldn’t have. Finally, this week I got the two types of Italian food I had not had since coming to Italy this time. While out walking I got gelato, as seen in the picture
(oh and that was strange for the passers-by to see while I took that picture) and pizza which was finally offered at the place I have been having lunch near work.
I have met a few American students, mostly juniors who are studying abroad. Mark and I met a couple of girls and their wierd friend at the Super Bowl party and we also went to a birthday party for an American girl and her roommates, one of whom was a friend of someone Mark knows from back home.
THe pictures of the "artwork are examples of things I have decided one would not be able to find in an American office building, but in Italy I guess it is all fair game, even inside of individual offices, like the "gone ropin" poster, which hangs next to where Betty sits (which I am sure she enjoys).
I think that is all for this week, we will see what next week has in store. Carnivale is coming up soon and Mark and I want to go to Venice for that, but first we have to find a way to stay there. I have to wait and see if
american themed party
Mark hosted an "Amrican themed party" which still means nothing to me, but it was fun. Alberto knows anyone for us to stay with, which I will ask him when he returns from Phoenix this weekend.
Ciao ciao,
Taylor
