It’s our last day in the Veneto region today and finally the temperatures have dropped into the 20s. Our morning visit was to Pordenone which is a largish, modern, University town further inland from Portogruaro. We took a shot that we were close to the town centre and parked in a parking building to walk into town. A good choice since it was only two blocks away. Daph managed to find a “Wind” shop to sort out her phone problems (still) and had to buy a plan to allow her to phone out and send texts out. With the money already paid for a SIM card, loading money, registering etc you would have thought enough had already been paid. Geo: 45.9639, 12.6575Poor little Matthew - he had vomited and vomited all day Saturday, but after spending the night tucked up with Mummy, he woke feeling much better - he was keen to tackle croissants and ham for breakfast!Esio met us outside the B&B and we followed him to Mass, where Matteo was the altar server. It's a fairly new church, and this Sunday included a blessing of the harvest...though, when the priest took a big bowl, some salt and some vegetables, I thought he might be going to make some minestrone!Then followed a lovely day with the Pordenone cousins. We toured Esio and Antoinella's enormous house that they have recently built. It is huge, and very open plan, which is unusual for Italians. As an American living in Italy, I have the opportunity to see Italy, the Italians and their EU neighbors in a light that few natives are willing to admit. Many have dreamt of traveling abroad to absorb the beauty of the gondolas in Venice, the Sistine Chapel in Rome, the vineyards of Tuscany and awe at the beauty of Piancovallo atop to Dolomite Mountains; myself included. The country offers beautiful, picturesque sites that constantly surround you, regardless of the region of Italy you’re traveling through. I have filled my camera many times just driving from my home to one of the open air markets held 7 days a week. What we fail to see on the travel channels, magazines and brochures are the true colors of Italy. The country is plagued with thieves, pickpockets, hooligans, corruption ... read more
