Hi everyone! It's been a few days since I've had a chance to get on here; my first week has just been a flurry of activity! I had thought that my first few days would be purely looking for a place to live and jobs, but my fantastic German friends made sure that I still had to go explore the city and have some down time. We've thoroughly explored Temple Bar and I'm pretty sure I've been in almost every pub down there ha ha! Don't worry however; our main goal was to hunt down the best Irish bands in the city and we definitely found some pretty impressive ones. The Temple Bar plays some fantastic traditional Irish music and we went into this cool little pub called the Palace which was really fun. Yesterday, I even got to try some of my own Irish dancing (no, we did not take pictures, to protect our pride) with a group of other Canadians here on the SWAP program. I think we laughed more than we actually accomplished proper dancing, but it was a blast and I met some really nice Canadians that I'm sure I'll be seeing a lot more of. It's
My bestest German friends!
The lovely Anna-Lena and Katharina nice to have a bit of connection to back home and ease a bit of the homesickness.
Dublin is such a culturally rich city and everywhere you go, there's some sort of music or dance or form of artistic expression going on. It adds such a flavour to the environment and makes it feel like a giant celebration all the time. One night when we were wandering around Temple Bar there was a band playing on the street which was actually really good, but featured an amazinggg dancing leprechaun which was a real riot (yes I know, I'm picking up Irish phrases already). They attracted such a crowd, it was hilarious and I'm sure there will be some videos of it up on Youtube eventually. We also went to this open air market yesterday which was a neat experience and the homemade farmers' foods were to DIE for. We bought these fresh yogurt/berry scones that I literally drooled over and they had a really good variety of organic fruits and vegetables which was nice.
So today I switch to a new hostel farther north, which is actually a converted poet's townhouse from the early 1900's. I'll be sure
Silly dancing leprechaun man
And the back of Anna-Lena's head, she was loving this. to take some pictures, because apparently they have a lovely Japanese garden you can have breakfast in and the building itself looks beautiful. Tomorrow I really start my job hunting in earnest, going to literally every shop I can find to drop off a CV. I also have an interview with a temping agency on Tuesday, so most likely I'll end up with an office job for a month or so, which will at least get me going. All I can say is that I'm glad I'm not in London right now; I don't know how many of you have been watching it on the news, but the atmosphere is quite tense here right now with the rioting in London and it doesn't look like it will abate any time soon. Luckily the Irish try to distance themselves from the Brits as much as possible, so we don't have to worry about any unrest here. Anyways, I'm off to go get settled in at the Townhouse, so hugs and kisses to you all and I'll be sure to write again soon!
xoxo Sarah
