gravity bar Today was pretty much the opposite of yesterday, just a great day all around. We woke up around 11am feeling great after getting about 13-14 hours of sleep. Went downstairs and made some leftover pasta and set out to check out Dublin properly. Of course, we started at the Guinness Storehouse/Museum, which is conveniently located right next to the actual brewing facility (which by the way is absolutely immense). The place sounds kind of like a corny tourist trap but it's actually quite well done and entertaining. We ended up staying there for probably 3 solid hours. In a list the highlights were: seeing the 9000 year lease Arthur Guinness signed to start the business, learning you are supposed to drink Guinness in 7 gulps in 7 minutes, Josh learning to pour the perfect pint and getting his certificate (it takes 119.5 seconds by the way), and finally the gravity bar at the top with 360 degree views of the city where I got my complimentary free pint of the "good stuff" which was delicious.
From there we walked around the rest of the tourist area south of the Liffey River. We ended up checking out the Christ Cathedral Church
dublin
this pretty much sums up dublin and St. Patrick's Cathedral from the outside as the price of admission was 5 euro each (wtf!). After that we strolled through St. Stephen's Green and Trinity College and ended up with a massive late lunch at an awesome Lebanese place, lot of these in Dublin by the way.
All the stereotypes you hear about Ireland kind of seem to be true, which really isn't a bad thing. Sure the weather is 50 degrees, windy and cloudy no matter what day it is or where you are on the isle but the people are real amiable and they definitely love their pubs and brews. The Guinness signs and pubs with the traditional names are ALL over the place.
Josh and I ended up making a simple dinner at the hostel and wound up talking to a South African guy and an annoying crazy American who hated his country with a passion. He decided it was necessary to preach to us about the negatives for about an hour including my favorite line "I will punch a Cuban in the face if I see him waving his Mexican flag on Cinco de whatever" Way to stay classy my man. Anyways,
josh at guiness factory
josh at guinness factory we escaped that convo and headed out to the Temple Bar area to check out the nightlife and ended up just going to the actual Temple Bar for a couple of beers. Real cool place and a lot larger than I anticipated. Had some traditional Irish music going so we just hung out there for a bit before heading home for the night. Back at the hostel we ended up watching the Canadians-Penguins hockey game for a bit with this cool fellow named Felix from Montreal (big habs fan). Talked about hockey and traveling for a while and he gave me some pretty good tips and preached how traveling alone was the only way to go so that was a nice confidence builder. To bed.
