On Saturday I went on a heritage trip with UCC Chaplaincy. We went for a day trip to explore Youghal in County Cork and Ardmore in Waterford. Youghal is a medieval town where Oliver Cromwell permanently left Ireland from. It used to be the 2nd most important port in the British Empire. The stained glass in this church contains, among other things, the family symbols and crests of powerful families of the area.

Marks like these were found in the oldest part of the church, left by the masons who built it. It was said if they didn't mark their work they wouldn't be paid.

This is where the paupers coffin would have been held. When someone died the people at the church would take the coffin out of the wall and use it to transport the body back. Then they would throw the body in a cave behind the coffin to rot and place the casket back in the wall until its next use!

About 300 people live year-round in this tiny coastal town, but the population grows greatly over the summer for obvious reasons.

This is the rock that St.Declan followed after asking for divine guidance on where to found his church. It floated to Ardmore, so he began Christianizing the area.
