Cottages
My absolute favorite home. I would live there. I knew we were going to go on an excursion, but to be honest I wasn't too excited about it. I was tired and didn't actually feel like doing anything that day. But, of course how could I miss it? So, the bus picked us up at 9:30am with Finn, Kevin, and the munchins Owen, Aisling, and Roisin. I didn't know what to expect because I wasn't even really sure where we were going.
We pulled up to this old looking castle and I realized we were at Bunratty Castle. We went inside and it was beautiful. A tour guide gave us a quick description of the history of the castle and then we were free to roam around. A few of us decided to go climb up to the top. The staircase was so tiny. By tiny I don't just mean small, I mean it was difficult for someone to climb up, never mind having one person climb down and someone else climb up. The view from the top was gorgeous, but trying to make our way back down was actually scary. We had to pull off into a doorway so people could get by. It was nuts. After
The Horses
I fell in love. that we decided to roam around the grounds.
I'd be lying if I didn't say I wasn't completely in heaven. It was like Sturbridge Village and anyone who knows me knows that I love that place. There were cottages with thatched roofs set up as homes representing how they used to be. One was a farmer's family home and it was complete with beds, tables, a fireplace and even a baby basinet. I eat that stuff up. I could've spent hours in there looking at each and every piece. Another cottage was a poor family's and another was a fisherman. It was just so cool.
We walked into one home that was an upper class family representation and a woman in period clothing was peeling apples for an apple pie and she was maintaining the facade of the woman of the house. The detail that goes into creating these homes is incredible.
As we walked further along we came to a little village with adorable stores and bakeries. A couple of women were selling homemade scones and pies. We stumbled upon one of those antique photography places and instantly I was intrigued. As weird as it sounds
Family Homes
Look how cute this is?? it's my dream to dress in period clothing. When I was in the play Our Town I fell in love with my early 20th century costume.
My friends thought I was crazy, but something in me told me I had to do this. I told them they could leave and I sat to get my picture taken in these clothes. This wonderful older gentleman was in there as well with a younger woman who was a relative of his. He was telling me about how much he loved Ireland and poetry and the importance of not just gathering information, but learning. It was fascinating.
My picture was everything I could have dreamed of. I love it. After I kept walking and saw a little section that was a play place for children with fairies. It was so cute. It was so nice to just walk alone and take in everything I wanted to see. I could stay in one of the homes for as long as I wanted. Eventually I ran in to Morgan, Erin, Bridget, and Jess and we walked back to the bus together.
We left Bunratty Castle and the Folk Park and we went to
The Autograph Tree
Look at that history. Coole Park. Coole Park is a beautiful place to walk around, run, and just enjoy nature. Finn and Kevin brought us to the tree that was signed by many famous writers including Lady Gregory (whom we had just learned about in class!) and William Butler Yeats. The English major in me was screaming.
Then Finn taught us how to count how old a tree was when it was cut down. Pretty cool stuff I must say. We all walked down to this body of water and immediately Bridget and I spotted what we thought we cows in the distance. We were off like a shot heading down the shore to see these creatures. Turns out they were not cows, but horses. My God were they gorgeous and so friendly. Kevin came after us, not to scold us but to see what we were doing. We got to pet and admire these amazing creatures. It was great.
