Iceland Travel Blogs

Settled by Norwegian and Celtic immigrants during the late 9th and 10th centuries A.D., Iceland boasts the world's oldest functioning legislative assembly, the Althing, established in 930. Independent for over 300 years, Iceland was subsequently ruled by Norway, then Denmark, achieving full independence in 1944.

Iceland experiences a rather mild climate for a country on such a northern latitude, yet weather patterns are known to be volatile, conditions changing frequently. During the summer months, Iceland never reaches full darkness, and in northern areas a Midnight Sun can be seen. Iceland's stunning landscape provides areas of geothermal activity, mountains, waterfalls and glaciers. It's cities although small, provide both a taste of traditional culture and the chance to experience the Icelandic way of life.

Highlights

 • Gullfoss (The Golden Falls)
 • The Jökulsár Lagoon
 • Dettifoss
 • Vestmannaeyjar
 • The Culture House museum - holding a large collection of medieval manuscripts.
 • The Blue Lagoon
 • Reykjavík

Tips and Hints

Best to travel in the summer months - winter offers near permanent darkness and freezing weather conditions.

Few minutes to write before heading out into the rain. PHOTOS TO BE ADDED LATER AS THIS INTERNET CONNECTION IS PAINFULLY SLOW. With all the running around leading up to the trip, it didn´t really hit me that I was leaving until I was sitting on the runway at Logan. A little excitement, a little anxiety, at that point I couldn´t turn back so it was really all arbitrary. The flight was choppy and I didn´t sleep well (my seat wouldn´t allot me the .3 inches of reclining that really doesn´t make a difference, but really does, all at the same [View Full Entry]

A rare blue sky in Iceland - Heimaklettur, Westmann Islands. It is partly the ominous landscapes, and partly how remote and untouched everything feels that makes Iceland feel like it must be the last place on Earth. I have never seen a place look as beautiful in overcast weather as Iceland does. Threatening clouds and a dark and stormy sky seem appropriate for a land covered in lunar-esque rocks, where steam randomly billows out of the ground. At times we felt like we were on the moon, but then the sun would come out and we realised it was Earth, but [View Full Entry]

DAY 133 I am so excited today because the first thing that I get to do is go horseback riding. I have seen the icelandic horses in the fields and they have to be the happiest horses in the world. I see them chasing each other rearing up on one another and they just look like they are a bunch of kids in the school yard. When I arrive at the horse farm, we are given equipment to use for the ride, helmets and warm clothing if needed. I take a pair of gloves as I have none. The saddles are [View Full Entry]

Iceland blew my mind. Words don't really do it justice, so I'll just put up loads of pictures... (Umesh will be pleased about that...) Highlights for me were : every hike, every park, every protected area but especially Landmannalauger, and a ride to the bus station in Bjork's mum's car (though she wasn't driving)! And Skyr! Yum. For those of you who are technology challenged... if you click on the small picture it will enlarge and you can read descriptions etc. For these photos, it's worth enlarging them! Enjoy. We hadden [View Full Entry]

The Nature of Iceland; Field Notes from the journal of guide Donald Lyon, July 1-15, 2009 Day 1--Arrivals in Iceland: Fair weather in Reykjavik--close to shirt sleeves as Bob Ehrhart and Dolores Frank of the Sacramento region finally cleared customs but where is Chris Kibre of San Francisco? Your humble correspondent (YHC) Donald Lyon of Brownsville, Oregon couldn't get any news from the airline but via the grapevine we learn that weather conditions delayed flights landing at JFK. We hoped she would arrive the next day and contact either the hotel in Reykjavik or our guesthouse in Stykkis [View Full Entry]

DAY 131 I left Charles De Gaulle airport really early in the morning. My flight was only 3 hours and what an airline (Icelandic Air). I had a tiny screen right in front of me and I could choose the movies I wanted to watch. I did have to buy my sandwich for 3 euros but the Pepsi was free. A really smooth flight. I landed in the Keflavik airport to find that I had gained 2 hours. Fabulous!! The drive to Reykjavik took about 35 minutes and then only to the bus station where I took a taxi to my [View Full Entry]
