Hello everyone, it 's time to say thank you to over 200 subscribers, who "traveled" with us around the world and who are still with us.
We spent a week in Iceland. The country everybody has the image of cold, dark, grey and since April extremly vulcanic ( Have I mentioned Elyaialla joekkul?). Well, we had a completely different experience. We ha a week of total sunshine, of white night and sunburn.
But slowly, we arrived in Rejkyavik around 1am and it was still day light. So we took a bus to our hotel arrived around 2 in the morning and went to sleep with a sleeping mask while light was shining into our hotel room. Since tere is basically 24h of sunshine in July, it is a constant coming and going in the hostels. People arrive at 2am as we did and others leave at 5am to go on a hike. When Florian wake up the net morning around 8am, only one other guy was left in his room, 6 have already checked out.
Rejkyavik is a city of about 180,000 inhabitants and is by far the biggest (and only) city in Iceland. Iceland was settled
around 872 a.D. and since then these people lived a pretty secluded life. For example they speek pretty much exactl the same language , they spoke 1200 years ago. A very normanic viking norwagian. The became in dependend from Danmark in the 194X, but developed a national pride over teh previous 150 years.
Ok, we spend a few days in Rejkyvik , did some sightseeing and we amazed by the clear air. The air comes directly from the Arctic and is so clear, that the colors apear very birght, compared to our dusty fogy industrialized air.
We spend half a day at teh blue lagoon, which is the number one seightseeing thing in Iceland. IT is an artificial swimming pool, that is heated with the hot water from the nearby powerplant. The owner put in some salfor (?), which should be good for the skin , but dreis out your hair, to teh extend that ladies get worried...
WE hit the road and experienced many friendly people in this country of just 300,000. The speed of life is a little slower than we are used to, and that is a good thing. People mostly live of fishing
and the government controls the quotas strickly, so as soon as the quotas are met... thats it for the year. And people stay home.
We also went to the lake Myatin (?) visited the local sufur wells and went tostrokkur the only geyzir ther is on iceland. Although they have the image as a geyzir rich country, there is only one, that regularly erups. See the picutes. It is quite amazing, to be just a few feet away from this little whole in the earth, and suddenly for a second or two a 20 feet high water fuountain errups- and that every 4-6 minutes. The water is nearly 100 degrees celcius and due tot eh depth of the underearth geyzir ( ca. 80 feet) the water heats up and when it can not expand anymore in it small udner earth chanells, it takes the way out on the top.
This travelblog has around 90m picutes, since most of it is nature, we did not put a comment on every single one. Feel free to scroll through them and enjo the beauty of this little island in the north Atlantic.
