Today we have to get up early. As usual it’s the one day I am not already awake. We need to be in the mountains for our ice cave tour at 9.30am. Google says one hour, the tour company say two…so we allow two and a half, thinking it will probably take one and a half plus an hour for our breakfast in the van. It’s dry when we leave camp at 7am but we can see dark clouds over the mountains. We are suitably clad (at least we hope we are) in thermals which include two wicking t shirts, full thermals, cords, thin fleece, thick fleece and full waterproofs. Plus woolley hats and gloves! We arrive at Husafell Outdoor Adventure Centre at 8.30am. Time for a brew and breakfast. Just after 9am and others start ... read more

This edition brings us out of the Westfjords and into North Iceland. We will cover the trip from Pingeyri to Isafjordur, then down Isafjardardjup, across to Drangsnes. We will cover our first drive through a one way tunnel that has traffic both ways at the same time, our time in Isafjordur, the search for a sim and the camp at Drangsnes. Out of Pingeyri (it should be pointed out that the actual spelling of this town's name starts with an Icelandic 'thorn' - it looks like a p with a top as well as a tail; is pronounced as you would the Th in Thor; and, it seems, should be transliterated with th but then it isn't recognised by some English language apps) it is back into the mountains again for a trip of about 60km ... read more

Today started a little later as our journey wasn't as long. Prior to leaving we had a good chat with Swany and Peter (our Airbnb hosts). Plus Mom fell in love with the region and had to leave Dad in their garden. The interesting geographically speaking part of our day started when I programmed the next destination into the car's GPS navigation system. The journey that Swany said would take about 2-2 1/2 hours came up lasting from 10:30-5:30!!!! Needless to say the GPS felt it would be better to go north around the entire Trollaskagi peninsula and then a few more. Thus as we drove south towards the Ring Road (1) the GPS female voice with a more British accent kept telling us to turn around in every farm road we passed - some were ... read more

From Reykjavik to Hvammstangi Day 1 Check out our mode of transportation while in country, courtesy of Kuku Camper. We call her Silver Bullet - our camper van. Thankfully Abby is able to drive manual, otherwise we would be SOL. Kellie and I have never been taught to drive a stick shift. Reykjavik, the Capitol of Iceland, is where our journey began. From there, we headed north to the Ring Road, or Route 1. The plan for the next 8 days is to travel the entire Ring Road, which encircles the country. We will be traveling along the country in a clockwise fashion, making stops along the way to sightsee and discover more about Iceland. This trip is the ultimate road trip. The scenery is absolutely stunning. Glaciers, waterfalls created from glacial melt, mountains, Icelandic horses, ... read more
