Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001. To be updated

Athens Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
NO where near enough time in Athens unfortunately. Enjoyed a quiet dinner with Tioby and Caitlin and saw the Acropolis by night (amazing) then headed back to the hotel. The morning after we did a tour of the Acropolis and then headed straight for our island cruise. Acropolis was something to see, under restoration which has taken away some of the appeal, I prefer the Italian style of no restoration, seems so much more authentic. [View Full Entry]

Arrival in Athens Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Athens was the start and stop for our trip. We departed from Atlanta on Aug 31st on a direct flight overnight to Athens, an 11 hour flight. The airport was easy to navigate and we soon caught caught the Metro (Blue Line) for €6 each to Syntagma Square where we walked to our hotel only a few blocks away. The ride was probably close to 45 minutes, the last 15 minutes the bus was filled with people shoving to get off an on and we were separated from our luggage (in the storage area) by a wall of people. Luckily almost [View Full Entry]

Day 6: Patmos Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Patmos
October 1, 2009 Judy and I were the first passengers off the ship on tenders today along with only three other crew going ashore right at 8am. I guess the others had later tours planned or just slept in. At least in Patmos, there is no huge hill to get up and down from the port. The port is conveniently located right in downtown. We didn't exactly have a plan today but found a rent a car place straight across from where the tender dropped us off. They had a nice little car available for 30 Euro that was much better [View Full Entry]

today is a day trip to this ancient site. the highlight was viewing the spot where the Olynpic torch is lit every two years. a chic greek fashion model or someother noteworthy and beautifyl woman takes on the role of a goddess. Origins The Olympic Games were a series of athletic competitions held for representatives of various city-states of Ancient Greece. Records indicate that they began in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece. They were celebrated until 393 AD.The Games were usually held every four years, or olympiad, as the unit of time came to be known. During a celebration of the [View Full Entry]

Day 5: Santorini Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Santorini
September 30, 2009 Judy and I awoke to the sun rising over Fira, the largest city on Santorini. No time for a sit down breakfast, we opted instead for the buffet, which was fine. The ship does not dock in Santorini but rather tenders passengers over by smaller boats. Of course the Princess paid tour guests get to go first but we didn't have to wait long for our boat to take us ashore. Since the crowds at the dock were light we took the cable car to the top in under 5 minutes. The port at Santorini is some 600 [View Full Entry]

Jens birthday on Ios Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Ios
Well this was by far the funnest island of our trip... Arriving in Ios it was straight into the pool for Andy Pandy and as for me I hit up a deck chair for some more well deserved sunbaking... Strawberry daquiries all round and a yummy chicken risotto got us through til dinner time... It was the night before my birthday and I was so excited... so was everybody else. Andy worried that I was missing my muma too much on my birthday organised a girl patrol to save the day. Laura (hairdresser from Perth) was amazing and chopped all my [View Full Entry]

Day 4: Cruise  Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
September 29, 2009 Today our cruise departs from Athens. Our driver was coming at 3 p.m. to pick us up so we had some time left in Athens to explore. Judy and I wandered over to Syntagma Square to buy some postcards and stamps. There were plenty of shaded benches in the square to choose from to write the cards. We realized that we left our map back at the hotel and opted to try the fancy hotel on the square to see if they could give us one. THey kindly did and also offered to mail the postcards. We'll see [View Full Entry]

Day 3: Athens Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
I awoke early to catch the sunrise. While pretty, it was not that inspiring and probably not worth the effort. Sunsets are much better at least from our hotel vantage point. With the Parthenon now bathed in sunlight. Judy and I headed out to knock some things off our shopping list. We found the equivalent of a Target named Hondos Center here to pick up some toiletries. I also was able to find a electric adapter to allow me to recharge my laptop. It died due to lack of power and kept me offline for most of yesterday. I also was [View Full Entry]

Day 2: Athens Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Our first full day in Greece started with a nice hotel breakfast before heading out to the Monastiraki to visit the market., What an amazing collection of stuff from David Hasselhoff vinyl records to vacuum tubes. Judy managed to find a couple of trinkets to bring home regardless. Next up was the changing of the guard at the Parliament building. What a site. The high stepping guards were cool but even more entertaining was the police officer blowing his whistle constantly while waving his arms to move the crowd back for the parade entrance. The ceremony was OK at best and [View Full Entry]

Magical Santorini Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Santorini
Well this Island was just magical... The postcards don't do it justice at all. Dinner was served on the side of a cliff top overlooking the Caldera on the first night. It was breathtakingly beautiful, unexplainable... The food was superb and the 1 liter Rose we drunk in an hour was also fantastic...hehe. It was off to the highlander where we danced the night away, splurging on cocktails (2 for 7euro) and shooting bazzilions of shots... It was then up on the bar for some go go dancing led by the infamous timmy tim tam... With heaps of old tunes belted [View Full Entry]
