Had the best fish meal on tour last night at the local harbour. followed by 263 steps back to the top. Good for the soul. today we had a fabulous day touring the volcano. we caught a boat at 10.25 and spent the day travelling between isldands. the highlight was the volcano which still smokes and is still warm to the touch. the volcano last erupted in 1950 and is constantoly monitored. ran into Cassey and Shalini on their honeymoon from Canada. Delightful couple. we swapped taxi stories and shared travellers tales on a very pleasant boat trip. tomorrow we will head to the other end of the island and maybe visit the old port before we fly back to Athens.... read more

Santorini is what you see in pictures and soooo much more! Coming in to the port on the seacat, the first thing you notice are the cliffs, with the white buildings clinging to the sides. The "tourist info" is really "car hire", and we hire a car as Oia is a bit of a drive from the port. Up the mountain road and through Fira, the main city, and suddenly we are looking down on a wide plain, farmland and houses, spreading to the volcanic beach ("smooth black sands", the brochures boast). This is not the Santorini of the travel brochures! Our hotel is just off the main square, where we and others park the car. we do not have direct access to views of the sunset, but a walk up the "street" next to the ... read more

Just a quick update. Knossos was disappointing. There are a number of 19 and early 20th century archaeologists whoi have a lot to answer for. Arthur Evans did Knossos and rebuilt stuff in the style he thought was "most appropriate". As a result he "restored" areas as he felt they probably were 1600 BC. Hah!!!! This morning we came on a seacat to Santorini. Hired a car. drove around the island today in 90 minutes and sat on the gighest point. Spectacular views. But the biggest news is that Dale and the team at The Loft won the Local Govt cultural awards on friday for the Loft's music program. Well done to all. Great stuff and i'm very proud of you.... read more

Since my last update, I have spent my "Spring Break" in the Cycladic isles of Greece. First was Tinos, where it was windy and rained about half the time I was there. However, they generally don't get much rain so it was good for the island but too bad for us. While on Tinos I saw the pilgrimage church of Our Lady of Tinos which houses a special old icon of Mary. There was also a bus tour of the island which included two small villages that we toured and ate lunch in. In one our group doubled the population just by entering. At this place we saw a basket weaver and viewed the terrain which looks like the possible surface of the moon with all its round stones just sitting on the landscape. Tinos is ... read more

We are in Santorini! We got here on Wednesday afternoon and it was raining, so that wasn’t good, but it cleared up yesterday. This island is absolutely amazing! It is so gorgeous. It’s exactly how the pictures show, but even better. Even though it was raining, it was still really great to be here. Our hotel is just a little ways outside of the capital of Fira. There’s a nice little walking path that leads right into downtown and all along the walkway there is a gorgeous view of the caldera. It’s amazing! As soon as we got to our hotel I did my site report on Santorini. In my presentation I was talking a lot about how the shape of the island has changed and when the different islands were formed during various volcanic eruptions. ... read more

When I arrived in Athens it was cold and rainy, but I was so happy to see my parents! We spent the day walking around a bit and ended up at this restaurant later that evening with live Greek music. When we first arrived we thought the music wasn't so great, but this woman ended up singing and she was amazing! Everyone in the restaurant was singing and clapping, I felt like I was in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. My parents were really jet legged so it was hard to adjust to sleeping with them. They would wake up at 4 in the morning and then want to take a nap in the evening. I ended up getting adjusted to their sleeping habits and had a hard time readjusting when I got back to Milan. ... read more

We had to get up around 4:30am to get our ferry. We wanted to get there early just in case... well I don't know just in case what. We just wanted to get to Santorini. However, Holly is a bit of an amateur traveler, so we got there 2 1/2 hours early... WWAAYYY too early. Anyway, we found 5 taxis sitting together hanging out and talking, and the drivers were very friendly for 5am. I was just waiting for my good impression of the Greek people to be ruined, but it really never did. I will say one thing, they are not the best smelling people. Anyway, we got on the ferry which really was like a little hotel. I am used to the ferry that goes from NC to the outerbanks, but this one had ... read more

It was all about relaxing on the Islands for us as our trip was winding down and that’s exactly what we did. It is quite hard to keep busy on the Islands this time of year anyway with it the low season and all well it was more like the dead season as there was know one around at all so we had whole beaches for ourselves which was fine by us. The weather was not as warm as it could be but we were still getting around in shorts and did some swimming in the crystal clear waters still so was very nice. Our first Island we went to was called Syros and were there for three nights. When we arrived of our ferry we were greeted by a few hotel owners trying to get ... read more
