Be warned - because we are escaping the heat in Athens by using the free internet in air conditioning, this blog is a biggie! So it was sad to leave Turkey, but as soon as we got on the first ferry to take us to the Greek island of Samos I think we were already picturing ourselves swimming in the mediterranean. Samos isn't very far off the Turkish coast, but it is still expensive to get there (about AUD $50) and you have to go through customs and immigration at the port. Samos was beautiful and just like you picture greek islands to be like with the colourful buildings that come right to the water's edge, funky little cafe's lining the shore and big cruise ships in the harbour. We had four hours to fill in ... read more

Hi all! I'm back in the U.S. of A. Things have been crazy with work, and travelblog.org crashed right as I posted my last blog, so the first Greek Island we visited, Mykonos, will take me a little while to recover again. Until then, I've gone ahead and posted my Santorini blog. It was our second Greek Island and a great one at that. I think I wrote the text on the plane ride home. Please enjoy! July 21-24 - Santorini OH MY GOSH! Words cannot describe how amazing this place is. Thank you, Robin, for all your recommendations! I’m so glad we decided to stay in Oia, the most Northern town and high up on the caldera. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Santorini, it is a HUGE volcano, an explosion occurred in ... read more

Thank you again for all the messages. Although we are having a blast, we still long for all of our friends at home. Well, at least for a minute. Back to the adventure. Naxos was an enjoyable place to put up our feet but there was much anticipation of spectacular beauty as we headed to Santorini and we were not disappointed. There were many conversations about living on the edge of a volcano and how many people died. Once we got over the “volcano” talk, we were left to enjoy and marvel at the Greek ability to construct buildings where it is “engineeringly” impossible. The 2 ½ hour ferry ride was occupied by trying to find new and ingenious ways to stay out of the baking sun (and lack of air circulation due to the interesting ... read more

Santorini is relatively small so we rented a small four wheel ATV so we could see it all. We had heard that Oia was the most beautiful part of the island, and that was true. But we decided to stay in Fira since it has a greater selection of the best restaurants, activities, and night life. The people-watching was better in Fira and Oia seemed a bit sleepy for us. We took a day tour sailing on the Mediterranean. The sailing tour included a guide who took us into the center of the volcano that originally formed the island of Santorini. (http://www.greeka.com/cyclades/santorini/santorini-volcano.htm). The guide also said that an excavation on Santorini has uncovered a civilization that was present at the time of the eruption (3600 years ago). The excavation has shown that the civilization had plumbing ... read more

Untitled Thursday, (Friday we went on an All Day Tour- that's on the next blog), Saturday, Sunday, Monday If you ever travel to Greece and only have time to see one island, make it Santorini. It has the most spectacular vistas I've ever seen. The island was born from the eruptions of a volcano, leaving behind what they call the caldera, the outer edges of the crater. We traveled from Mykonos to Santorini on a high-speed hydrofoil which took about 3 hours, less than half the time of a regular ferry. And it rides just like a plane. All the ferries arrive at the new port at the bottom of a cliff. After gettting off we then took a taxi to Perissa on the other side of the island. The ride to the top up the ... read more

Finally with the whole family Europe » Greece » Santorini By Dave090July 12th 2007David Weinstein Well after a long full day in Athens, Debra and I took the ferry to the Greek isles and have met up with our parents and Jeremy (my brother). The Greek isles are very beautiful. We are having a great time all being together. As always, there is not much time to type. We saw so many things in Athens though. The Acropolis was wonderful but crowded. All the other runes and museums were excellent. Santorini is also very nice. The food is great, and the weather amazing. This afternoon we are taking a boat to the volcano center and to swim in hot springs. It should be great. Ta... read more

The island of Santorini. So many things to see and do... I found a room on the Parrisso beach youth hostel. My bed was in the room with another 24 people. However, It was a great experience. I met 5 Austrialian girls that I spent 2 days with. I also met other travellers from all over the world. The Parrisso beach is famous for its black sand beach. The send gets very hot during the day. However, there are tons of beach bars to cool off and dance to your favorite music day and night. Fira is a biggest city of Santorini and it has great night life and amazing views from hotels and caffees perched up on the volcanic cliffs. I took a boat cruise which took me to the Volcanic island that is ... read more

I arrived at Santorini as sick as a dog. Actually as sick looking as the homeless dogs that run around here with one eye and the shakes...almost as bad as that. Our boat reached port and I thought we had taken a wrong turn and ended up in Colorado or Arizona. Absolutely amazing cliffs and mountains, but not what I had pictured in my head. The second we got to Villa Marvalia I fell right asleep trying to undo the damage Ios had wrought. I woke up the next day not feeling too good so Melissa went to the beach without me and I went foraging for some tea and a good book to pass the stay at home day with. I couldn't find tea and everyone told me there was a pharmacy in the next ... read more

Hello Everyone, it's been awhile as we have been having some action-packed, crazy adventures but once again we have emerged unscathed and amazed by the places we've been visiting and people we've been meeting. Venice was a city unlike any other that we've seen. Floating on the water, it is rich in history, beauty and tourists. Before we arrived, we met people who assured us that the only way to truly appreciate this area was to explore it by water boat - so this is what we did. We enjoyed two days of wandering the unique canals by boat and getting lost in the streets while on foot. We managed to locate the most enormous, delicious pizzas known to Italy (and our tastebuds) and checked out the location where "The Italian Job" was filmed. When ... read more
