Kastellorizo
en route to Rhodes 20 May Said farewell to Southern Turkey and our travelling mates Ian and Robyn and took the ferry across to the tiny island of Meis (called Kastellorizo in Greek), a 20 minute trip across the water, and we were in Greece! Had time for a coffee before boarding the huge Blue Star ferry for Rhodes, about a 5 hour trip. We were amazed when this ferry arrived in the tiny port of Kastellorizo, it filled the harbour and watching it turn around was a revelation! Easy trip floating along the coast of Turkey most of the way. Found a comfortable pension in the old town ( Sofias 50€ a night) then took a wander through the narrow cobbled streets of Rhodes old town which is surrounded by an ancient city wall, lovely! Dinner at Yiannis - delicious moussaka and beef stifado, tasty "home cooked" food for 27€ with wine, a great start to our Greek experience!
21 May In Rhodes Town, did own breakfast, used up our Costa Rican granola! Skyped Alister and Steph, then about midday, started our own walking tour, up to the acropolis, and along the hills to find a way down to the old town again, went to look
at the Grand Masters palace and the Street of the Knights (of St John), up the clock tower for the view and to the Church of the Virgin. Another nice Greek meal at dinner at the Island Lipsi restaurant, mince kebab and slow cooked lamb (kleftico), complementary dessert and tzatkis dip and great pita bread. €30 total with carafe of wine. Quite a tourist town but loads of atmosphere with a maze of narrow cobbled streets and the city walls.
22 May Had breakfast at the pension on the terrace, nice yoghurt, honey, egg, bread, jams, feta etc, Rushed down to get the
9am to Lindos, about 45 km down the coast, but it wasn't going till 9.30! At Lindos we walked up to the Acropolis which was amazing, a lot of the ruins had been reconstructed and there was a magnificent view over St Paul's Bay and the dramatic coastline. Got the bus back to Rhodes town, then a taxi to the port, which proved to be quite tricky, the streets are so narrow it is very hard to get around by car and taxis are only allowed in the old town if you have luggage! Also there were
Our ferry in port
Amazing how this big ferry could turn in the space of such a small harbour! 7 cruise ships in port today, place was busy! Unfortunately cruising is getting so popular now that small towns like Rhodes are just swallowed up by the volume of people off the ships. Took the the
4pm ferry to Santorini, which called into Kos on the way, arriving in Santorini
at 1am! (36 Euro each, not bad) A good chance to blog and answer emails en route. Costas from Galini's pension picked us up at the port and drove us to Oia which was wonderful, especially as we didn't get to the pension until
2am!
