Fethiye
view over marina from our pension 14 May
Arrived in Fethiye, on the South coast of Turkey, found a pension at the end of town overlooking the marina, stunning views from the terrace. Great for breakfast and drinks! Went downtown to the Fish Market for dinner. You choose your seafood from the cabinet, then the nearby restaurant cook it for you and add salad etc. We shared prawns and seabass, with a great lemon and garlic sauce.

Set out on a walk, went to see the Rock tombs in the cliffs near the town, Robyn and I watched the ladies sitting under the tree making flatbread which we sampled, delicious! Trudged over the hill to Kayakoy, lost Ian and Robyn on the way (long story) - couldn't find them, found out later there were 2 bus stops in Kayakoy and we were at different ones! Took bus over to Oludeniz, a beautiful but pebbly beach. No sign of our friends there, so walked to the Blue Lagoon for a swim and climbed up the hill for the view. Loads of Brits at Oludeniz, which is full of holiday resorts! Back at base, found Ian and Robyn, so joined them on the terrace for a wine,
then off for dinner at the Duck Pond restaurant.

Today we took the 12 islands cruise, with a company called Kardesier, a big sailboat, with sun beds up on top deck so we based ourselves there for the day. Lovely trip, called into different bays for swims off the back of boat, and they put the big sails up twice, a unique and new experience sailing on the high seas. So quiet! BBQ grilled trout with salads for lunch on the boat. Back to base, drinks on the terrace before tea then downtown for dinner. Turkish food is delicious and cheap! Nice travelling with Robyn and Ian, great company.

Got the bus over to Kayakoy, then walked up the hill through the ghost town which was left to decay after the Greeks were sent back to Greece. A great 2 hour walk over to Oludeniz with wonderful views. Took the boat to Butterfly Valley, then walked up to the waterfall, and back for a swim at the beach. Water warm and clear, but the beaches in Turkey are generally pebbly - so hard to get from the shore to the water! Our boatman stopped on the
way back at Blue Cave and Robyn and I swam into the cave off the boat. Dinner tonight same place as last night, we had pottery kebaps(cooked in a sealed clay pot) which were delicious! Amazing oven bread, comes out all puffed up. Very tired, long day but great fun.

Left Fethiye by bus, got the last 4 seats, so many people getting off and on during the trip too, popular way for locals to travel. Scenic drive, partly by the coast, got to Kas and found a nice pension run by a family, with a terrace for breakfast upstairs. After a rest, went for a walk downtown and to check out the best way to get to Greece. Went to see the Ancient Theatre which was in a magnificent setting on the hill over the sea. Dinner at Kasim Restaurant, got talking to a Turkish woman who had connections with the school in Istanbul where our sister in law worked - small world, even in Turkey!

After breakfast, we went for a walk along the Lycian Way, had to clamber down using ropes at one point! Had a drink and a swim in a lovely
Cooking up a storm in the sun
These ladies invited us to share their kai! Delicious! bay with very clear water! Walking back, took the wrong route and it was a real trek back in the hot sun, so we caught the little ferry boat back to Kas, much easier! Back to base for a rest, then Robyn and I went for a Turkish bath, it was great, first a sauna, then a scrub down, rinse, soap massage, and finally a face mask! I had a male doing mine, quite an experience, but no worries! Got our ferry tickets for Greece tomorrow, just 20 mins across the water. Last dinner with Ian and Robyn tonight. Today was Ataturk Day, lots of celebrations down in the square. Fitting end to our Turkish adventure!
