Geo: 38.4708, 22.5659Delphi is famous for the Oracle that once resided here, so renowned for her ability to foresee the future that the most powerful people of the ancient world traveled vast distances and paid small fortunes to consult with her before making any major decisions. Wouldn't they feel ripped off if they knew scientists now believe she was just spouting random drivel while high on ethylene gas?Turns out there was a chasm near where she sat, spewing toxic gases that made her all loopy and caused her to mutter nonsensical phrases that priests would interpret for those who had come to see her. The messages were rarely clear, and could often be understood as either good or bad, depending on what the receiver chose to believe. Sounds like a bunch of high hippies running a ... read more

Delphi 30 June 2013 After the 30 minute ferry trip (6 Euros) from Rio near Patras to Antirio, we were on our way to Delphi. This was only a short drive and we found the site easily. Delphi was believed to be ‘the centre of the earth’ in ancient times. It was known for its very famous place of Apollo hence the Temple of Apollo is the most notable structure on this site. In the late 8th century BC people used to come here to worship and to seek advice from the Gods. With the political rise of Delphi in the 6th century BC, and the establishment of the Pythian Games – a cultural, religious and athletic festival – the site entered a golden age until the arrival of the Romans in 191 BC. The site ... read more

Another long (3 hour) drive from the western Peloponnese to Delphi. First a 60 mile drive to Patra, which is a 2 lane road. The locals make it into a 4 lane road which makes life interesting, particularly when cyclists, pedestrians, tractors etc become involved. Carol stayed very quiet. I think she was in shock. (EDGES OF ROADS, BIG DROP, OLD GREEK LADIES AND MEN WITH DONKEYS WALKING ON THE HARD SHOULDER WHICH TIM IS DRIVING IN, MAD DOGS RUNNING TOWARDS YOU AND DEAD CATS AND DOGS TO WEAVE IN AND OUT OF.)Then at Patra a new and very spectacular bridge, the Rio Antirro or Charlilaos Trikoupus (so good they named it twice) appears. (ALSO KNOWN AS THE A55) It really is an impressive piece of engineering, take a look at the photos. When you get ... read more

5 June Key Tours Day 3 Spent the morning at Olympia, a very interesting site. Was great to see the stadium where the games were held in BC. Another warm day. We spent the morning there, there was a special sports museum, then at the end, another museum with relics from the digs. Lunch stop was at a buffet restaurant, nice for 12 E, sat in the shade afterwards. Drove to Delphi in afternoon, a very scenic drive with rural and coastal views, and a stop at the new bridge at Patras. The road to Delphi was amazing, winding up the hills to the top. We were in a lovely hotel with a view right over the valley, millions of olive trees and then the sea in the distance. Had a swim in the pool and ... read more

The hotel owners probably wondered what we were up to when we didn't appear downstairs for breakfast like all their other guests for the night. However, our overnight rate didn't include breakfast so we fed ourselves from our supplies although we didn't bring the microwave in so there was no scrambled egg. The breakfast room didn't compare to having breakfast on our airy balcony under the wide awning protecting us from the already warming sun and of course we had a toaster and they didn't downstairs. Although we had seen the passage of a small ship through the Corinth Canal yesterday which was more than we could have expected we didn't get to the bridge that crosses the 21 metre gap on the main road between Loutraki(where we stayed) and Corinth. The idea of a canal for the ... read more

Set off in the morning for the ruins just outside of town. Absolutely overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the land in this area of Greece. Mt. Parnassos, the famous home of the Greek muses, is said to have "shining cliffs," and I can easily see why. The mountain literally glimmers, and I now understand that this is truly the place to come to find your muse, and be inspired. It's hard not to be. Ancient Delphi is one of the great pilgrimage sites of the world. This is where the Greeks said the center of the Earth was, which has a great myth behind it. Zeus released two golden eagles that flew in opposite directions, and they met at Delphi (which actually comes from the word, delphis, or womb of the world). To mark the ... read more

Another great day of travel. It's always best to set off early, because you never know when random changes might happen to the bus schedule. So I was out of Olympia bright and early, and my first stop was Prygos, which is more on the coast. Then hopped a bus for the two hour drive up to Patras. This is the last big city in the Peloponnese before you cross over to Central Greece over this massive bridge that spans the Gulf of Corinth. This bridge is apparently an engineering masterpiece. Since the region has so many earthquakes, it was built in such a way that it's actually safer to be on the bridge than on land during a quake. Apparently the bridge moves with the shocks, or something like that. Then drove up the coast ... read more

After a brief divert to Parta, one of the larger towns in the Peloponnese, to buy a new camera. We stayed at a campsite near the colossal Rio-Antirrus Bridge, The World's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge that crosses the Gulf of Corinth. It was a brief stay as our next port of call was to be Olympia, home to the famous games of antiquity, and inspiration for the modern Olympics (it is here where the Olympic flame starts its journey). The Games started in 776BC until 394AD where Athletes from all over Greece, later to include Romans, would compete, in the nude, over 5 days. Although we can only wander through ruins now, you certainly get a feeling of what things were like 2500 years ago. Next stop was another important site, Delphi. Again this site started ... read more

Today the plan is to head straight to Delphi before it gets too hot out and then make our way north to Mikrokastro. Got up at 8am, packed up the few things we brought in and had some breakfast at the hotel. The ancient site of Delphi was literally just around the corner from the village of Delphi and we were there in just a few minutes. It was still very early but the parking in from of the museum was already full so we grabbed a spot on the edge of the road. We decided we should see the site first and then see the museum while it was still relatively cool out. We tried to buy water, but all they had was sparkling water at the snack bar. Luckily we had some water in ... read more

Got up at 10am and finished the last bit of packing, showered and had breakfast with Steve and we talked through some eth the previous night’s stuff. Steve and Rachel took the transfer with the luggage from the hotel to the new ferry port to meet our ferry Highspeed 5. The ferry was at 11:25am. I took the rental car and met the rental car guy at 11:15am. Holy crap I was freaking out that the rental agents were going to make me miss the ferry! Argh I hate being so stressed out by stuff like this, and the rental agent was laughing telling me to ‘relax - the boat never leaves on time’. We wrestled the damn luggage up the car ramp and onto the ferry again. Okay this was officially way too much luggage!!! ... read more
