The Temple of Poseidon was constructed between 444 and 440 BC, with 38 columns that rose 20 feet into the air. It once housed a 20 feet tall bronze statue of Poseidon in the hall of worship. It is located at Cape Sounion at the southern tip of mainland Greece. The first version of the temple was constructed in the archaic period. However, it was destroyed in 480 BC by the Persians during the Greco-Persian Wars. Pericles rebuilt the temple around 440 BC, although only 16 of the original 38 columns remain standing today. According to Greek mythology, Poseidon’s power is second to only Zeus. As the god of the sea, the mariners and fishermen of ancient Greece prayed to Poseidon to keep them safe from storms and shipwrecks and often left animal sacrifices and other ... read more

My awesome roommate, Megan, and I were tired of sitting in our apartment, so we decided to adventure out into Athens. Cape Sounion became our destination because it was only about an hour ride on a bus from Syntagma, it was cheap to get to, (it only cost about 12.60E--$18 for travel), and it also had the Temple of Poseidon! Bus trips sound easy enough, but finding the bus for Cape Sounion was quite an adventure. First Megan and I went to Omonia Square to catch the bus because that’s where the internet told us to go…well kids, don’t always believe everything you read on the internet! We had to talk to several kiosk guys (who spoke terrible English/didn’t know how the busses work) and found ourselves bouncing around the square. Eventually we ended up back ... read more

No snooze-alarm fest today! We were up at 9:20, well okay 2 snoozes. We got ready for the beach and went down for breakfast at the hotel. It was actually pretty delicious; they had cold cuts and hard boiled eggs but also eggs sunny side up and cooked ham and mini hot dogs (which seem to be the Greek version of sausages). They also had fruit, yogurt and cereal. So bellies full we grabbed our beach stuff and headed south. We decided to go to Cape Sounion first to see the Temple of Poseidon and then to the beach after. The road the hotel is on is called Poseidonos and it’s the coastal road. It probably took us about an hour to drive down to Sounion as the road hugged the coast with lots of switchbacks, but ... read more

Friday 6th May 2011 Down the Attica peninsular today to Cape Sounion noted as the site of the ruins of the ancient Greek temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea in classical mythology. The temple was constructed in approx. 440 BC, over the ruins of a temple dating from the Archaic Period. The remains are perched on the headland at a height of 60 metres and is surrounded on three sides by the sea. According to legend, Cape Sounion is the spot where Aegeus, king of Athens, leapt to his death off the cliff, thus giving his name to the Aegean Sea. The story goes that Aegeus, anxiously looking out from Sounion, despaired when he saw a black sail on his son Theseus 's ship, returning from Crete. This led him to believe that his ... read more

I have been remiss in adding to my blog. I'm 2 countries later and I need to catch up. It may end up being more pictures than typing since it takes an insanely long amount of time to upload pictures with mediocre connections. Or maybe I'm just too tired at the end of a long day and ready to sleep!! On that note, I'll wrap up Greece... Temple of Poseidon - Sounio (Cape Sounion) Driving from Delphi to Sounion was pretty and relatively uneventful for the first half. The second half however was back to the stress of driving in Greece. Bits I didn’t add to the blog about driving: the roads are not well labeled AT ALL. If you have a map that is actually labeled to show you the road number, it probably doesn’t ... read more

We arrived in Athens (quite tired) at about 12.30am and were met by Dimitrios who picked us up and took us to our hotel. He is a very nice chap. After a bad night sleep (revellers and noisy bast**rds at the hotel), we were met by Frank (Fotis) for our tour around Marathon and Cape Sounion. Steve was very keen to see Marathon due to its significance in Ancient Greek history. He has been a very capable and knowledgeable tour guide for me. His private study of ancient Greece and Rome has been very useful. On the way to Marathon, we stopped at the Marathon Lake (which is not that close to actual Marathon). It was good for me to have a stop - the lack of sleep had made me feel quite car sick and ... read more

Today was good. Rested and such. So my overall goal for today was to get to Cape Sounion, specifically to the Temple of Poseidon there. Getting to the bus station for that was a bit of a chore, but instead of whining about it (or, more accurately, in addition to whining about it), I decided to make it into an adventure. The National Archaeology Museum was on the way to Areos Park (where the bus station is), so I decided to see that. turns out that today is "World Museum Day", so while that makes stuff like this free (yay!), it also means today was crowdTASTIC. It's okay though, it was a lot of fun. Finding the museum sent me through a park that had to have once been nice, but was now entirely taken over ... read more

At 2pm, a tour bus picks us up at the hotel and we are off to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounio. The bus ride is about 1.5 hours long, the bus is far from filled and we liked the curbside service. This is when we get our first up close view of the Attica coast and the waters of the Saronic Gulf, part of the Aegean Sea and bigger picture the Mediterranean Sea. The bus ride is a bit hairy, we think the bus driver must be on a tight schedule the way he maneuverers the very narrow and steep roads. I get a little motion sickness and was super glad when we finally stopped. Although, it can’t go without saying that the small towns (upscale beach resorts) along the western coast of the ... read more

I took a day trip to Sounio where the temple of Poseidon stood. There was a metro strike, so I had to walk all the way to Mavromateon Terminal to catch the bus to Sounio. I have to say, I've traveled extensively and I am not that bad with directions, but I had a hard time finding the bus stop for the Sounio bus. Asking for direction can be quite daunting, as most people don't know what they are talking about. I was turning around the bus terminal, looking around and asking people where the bus stop is. There is not ticket booth that sells the ticket, you pay once you are on board. Kind of reminds me of Thailand. It took about two and a half hours to get there. I hardly felt the time ... read more

On my last full day in Greece the options of how best to spend the few remaining hours were many and varied. Eventually I decided that I wanted to go down to Cape Sounion, 70kms south of Athens to see the Temple of Poseidon, built in 444 BC. I also thought it would be nice to pack up a picnic lunch, especially given that Christos said he didn’t understand what a Kiwi picnic was. Communicating in English with Christos…..of course the only way I was able to…. was a source of constant amusement for me. I would blabber away and after a while would realise that Christos was looking at me with a bemused, somewhat lost look on his face. I would then say “do you understand?” and he would say with his very cute accent ... read more
