We visited Remigen on our last motorhome German trip in 2009 and then saw the remains of a railway bridge over the Rhine which had been destroyed in 1945 and but we couldn’t establish by whom. The bridge has never been rebuilt. This time we visited an interesting museum located in one of the remaining towers on the banks of the river. We discovered that the Germans had failed to destroy the bridge and in March 1945 the advancing American Troops had used it to establish their first bridgehead over the river. Two weeks later the Germans attacked it again with a V2 rocket and the bridge collapsed killing 28 Americans who were part of a party of engineers attempting to repair it.

In the Afternoon we crossed the Rhine by ferry and drove 200k north east through more lovely countryside to another excellent camper stop on the edge of the medieval town of Soest.
