This morning we had a late breakfast and the rest was used to reorganise suitcases. Late afternoon we had time to drive along the Mosel to Cochem via Bleistein, a lovely little place, on the other side of Cochem. With a late breakfast there was no lunch but by the time we arrived at Bleistein we could use something. That became a bowl of goulash soup with a bun and a beer. It nearly became a standard lunch. We had the same in Koblenz the other day. Walking into the small village we soon could see why people stop here and have a closer look. It is located at the foot of a narrow valley, surrounded by vine yards on impossible steep lopes. The market square and Carmalite abbey are build on the mountain rock. The St Josef church is we believe from around 300 AD but are not sure about this. We did found graves from that year. There is also a black Madonna there, brought up there by the Spanish in 1640. Has been removed but returned in later years. It contains some very nice statues and paintings. The streets in Bleistein are of course no place for cars.
Some are very steep so you have to walk. We had to cross the Mosel to enter Cochem. Very much the same as all the other places around the Mosel. We landed in a busy shopping street and what do you know, we found some nice shirts this time it was for me. In the meantime it was passed 6 p.m. and time to go back to Bernkastel to have a last dinner in this lovely restaurant, overlooking the Mosel. Next day we moved to Boppard on the Rhine. We had a marvellous stay in, Bernkastel-Kues a very nice place where we stayed. The staff was excellent and helpful. The owner came several times out to talk to us. He was refering to some of the ladies that work there as his second and third wives. Liz called him a bit of a taufel (devil). And would you know. In the morning at breakfast we pointed a sign out which hangs above the door which read (teufel's kuche) which means devil's kitchen. He is the cook you see. Great laughter with him and the staff. Here he came with an identical sign and said, So that you never forget me.
How nice was that. But everything comes to an end. Some last shopping and of we were towards Koblenz and from there Boppard. It was a very hot day, dark clouds appearing and we could see lightning across the river. Just before we turned of to Boppard we made a stop at Klotten to have a coffee with something. We were a bit lost how to get to Boppard and installed the Tom Tom to get us there. No problem for Mr. Tom Tom. We crossed the river and landed on a road one car wide, with lots of hairpins, not something that everybody appreciated. But that road took us right to the place we had to be. We were lucky to get a room here, lots of people seem to want to stay here. We even had a room overlooking the Rhine. We had a problem with a park, but that was soon organised. Now we installed ourselves and had time to walk along the Rhine. Lots of traffic on the water gave plenty of entertainment while walking there. Coming back from the walk, we settled for a beer on the terrace that overlooked the river. Pity, that was later
disturbed by heavy showers. Lots of people, that were on half pension, a special deal, had occupied the best places in the restaurant, made us decide to eat outside. We had to borrow an umbrella from the hotel to get us to a nice place also overlooking the river. We had a nice meal there. Boppard is a place that has railway lines on both sides of the Rhine. They seem to go all the time and is a nuisance when you want a good sleep. Nevertheless, there is no way to stop that. Some of us seem to sleep through that. Where we are staying is a very big hotel, not like the one in Bernkastel, that was very small comparing with this. Lots of tour buses stop here. Of course this makes the breakfast table very hilarious. More so, part of this Hotel is very old and has lots of entrees to the buffet breakfast. We had a good oversight of the area. People coming back of the buffet seem to get lost of where they were seated. You can see how much people eat ,they come back with plates loaded to the brim. Really speaking, we cannot say
that much for we also enjoy our breakfast. An improved weather situation made us go out for a walk along the Rhine.A very enjoyable exercise. This will be our last day here and tomorrow we have to return to Holland. So till than Liz & Allan.
