After a nice family breakfast at the hotel, we headed for Chemnitz. Our first stop was the city center where we did some exploring and shopping. Next, off to the bungalow and to get the kids checked into their room at Hotel Schloss Rabenstein, a beautifully restored hotel with a view of a Castle which belonged to a Count from the area. Not bad digs according to Jamie and Alec, especially considering the staff called to make sure they didn't want any breakfast and folded all of the clothes they'd left strewn around the room! We took a nice walk out in the woods to an observation tower, climbed all 200 stairs to enjoy the breathtaking view of the region, and then ventured on to a quaint chalet style restaurant nestled in the woods for a ... read more

After months of anticipation,, our travel day finally arrived! We met Jamie and Alec in Fort Myers from their connecting flight and then off to Germany. We had a quick bite to eat before boarding and then a trip to the Air Berlin Lounge for an overview of German geography and trip kick-off festivities! Jamie will always remember her first international flight by her proximity to the bathroom. Let's just say she had constant entertainment for the ten hour flight (but not much sleep)! After a connection in Dusseldorf, we were off to Dresden where we were met at the airport by Ines, Berndt and Friedi. Tired from the flight but ready for our adventure to begin, Ines chose a very nice Biergarten for our first stop. Kids enjoyed their first bratwurst of the trip and ... read more

This morning we started on a high cultural note with a visit to the Semperoper where we bought our tickets to see a performance by the Dresden (?) Symphony Orchestra featuring guest conductor and pianist Rudolph Buchbinder. I felt very underdressed in my sightseeing clothes. Who knew that people got all dressed up to go to the Opera House in the daytime?? Still people were dressed in everything from jeans and jumpers to dinner suits so I guess we weren't that out of place??! As we left Semperoper Bernie performed his good deed for the day. A lady tripped on the stairs behind him and probably would have had a very nasty fall if she hadn't fallen into Bernie's back. Fortunately Bernie was surefooted enough to stop the two of them from rolling all the way ... read more

We stayed in Leipzig in 2010 and walked the music trail and visited Bach, Mendelssohn and Schumann sites. This time we only spent one full day here and decided to take it easy after Berlin. Apart from walking around the small city area, we visited the old town hall on the Markt. This building is part of the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum and is a beautiful Renaissance building with a baroque tower. Apart from the ballroom and council chamber there is an exhibition taking one through Leipzig from medieval times to the present spread over 2 floors. The peaceful revolution of 1989 against the GDR started here. One place that we did revisit was the Coffee Baum cafe, an old coffee house and museum that serves wonderful coffee of course and delicious warm apple streudel! After 6 weeks ... read more

Dresden Germany 26 to 27 May 2013 After travelling along the A14 we arrived at Dresden…and still raining. How annoying! Oh well, we must go with the flow. Dresden, with a population of over 500,000 people, is said to be one of Germany’s most beautiful cities. It blossomed in the 18th century, when it became the cultural centre and acquired many magnificent buildings. Almost all of these however, were destroyed during World War 11, when allied forces mounted vast carpet-bombing raids on the city. Today restoration work continues. We saw some buildings that still require reconstruction, even now. It was on 13 February 1945 when 800 British aircraft launched the 1st of 5 massive firebomb raids on the city. These destroyed the greater city and killed 35,000 people, many of whom were refugees. After driving around ... read more

It's been a few days since I've updated my blog. It had been rainy and dreary here so wasn't so much to update. Just a few highlights from late last week were a bike ride to the little restaurant we discovered in the woods at the beginning of our time here and then dinner at Johannes and Martina's home. By the time Friday came, Ralf's "Disaster Manager" role was easing up a bit and he made some plans for us to stay at a very special hotel not far from here in the Erzgebirge region. When we arrived Friday afternoon, the sun was shining and the grounds were absolutely gorgeous. Ralf has the patience and persistence to find these amazing spots that make the time here in Germany so special. This hotel is in a chain ... read more

The rain and grey skies continue here in Chemnitz and throughout much of Germany as I understand. The flood waters are residing here but other areas are being hard hit. Some villages are completely underwater so we are thankful the worst of it seems to have passed for now in Chemnitz. As a result of all the rain and flooding we've had to make changes to our itinerary to see Buchenwald and the Mosel wine region of Western Germany. Maybe we will get a chance for a little travel this weekend but right now there is much to be done here and many other areas have had so much rain that planning an itinerary to avoid those areas may be difficult. So the blog won't be so interesting this time but at least will post updates ... read more

Geo: 51.051, 13.7337Dresden was once described as Germany's Florence. On the night of Feb 12 1945 over 700 Allied planes bombed 90% of Dresden's town centre out of existence, part of Churchill's plan to create terror within Germany as a means to end the war. Dresden has been rebuilt to the point where little of the damage can be seen. We visited the Zwinger Palace and visited three world class museums within. The first was the Gemaldgalerie Alte Meister, which is probably the finest collection of old master paintings outside of the Louvre. The feature painting is The Sistine Madonna painted by Raphael, a master work that the Saxony King paid 140 thousand franks for in the mid 1700's to add to his collection. Also contains Girl at a Window Reading a Letter by Jan Vemeer ... read more

Rain Rain Go Away! More on that in a minute but first a few details about Johannes 80th birthday party, our main reason for this trip. The party was held at a Gasthaus about 20 minutes from here. Martina is a "hostess with the mostess" by nature so the dining room was beautifully decorated and well stocked with an amazing variety of food and drink. This was the first time we've seen Johannes and Martina since their time in Florida. I recognized several of their friends and family from other events but several others recognized me from the hours of video and photo footage they've been coerced into watching from the 2 month Florida adventure. All very nice people and my German is getting a little better so am comfortable with greetings and small talk. Additionally, ... read more

Blessed to be back in Germany! The main reason for this visit is to celebrate the 80th birthday of Ralf's dad, Johannes. We arrived Tuesday morning and by the time we got settled at the Bungalow, we were just in time to enjoy the Tuesday sauna tradition with Ralf's friends. Such a nice group of people and the more I get to know them, the more we are able to communicate, even without a common language. For some reason, the adjustment to the time change has been more difficult this trip but after a few sleepy days and long naps, today (Friday) I finally feel human again. Also contributing to the drowsiness has been the very cold, grey weather. This morning it was only 45 degrees in Chemnitz...brrrr...I know Minnesota family and friends, you are feeling ... read more
