Yesterday was the longest driving stint of our current European holiday, Krakow to Dresden. We arrived at Dresden around 1.30pm, and checked into our Hotel, which was located in Neustadt, just across the river from the Old City. We had unfinished business in Dresden from our previous holiday in 2013, principally due to major flooding at that time, such that despite sandbagging, the river broke it’s banks and entered the Old Town. This unfortunately limited what attractions we could visit in Dresden, hence our return visit. We walked across the bridge into the Old Town, taking the time to visit the Frauenkirche, which was only finished being rebuilt in 2005, after being totally destroyed during the firebombing of Dresden by Allied Forces between 13 and 15 February 1945. The inner city of Dresden was 90% destroyed ... read more

Dresden Ah, where to begin with this gem of a city! I realize this isn’t your typical call to mind place to travel to within Germany, but I was insistent upon coming to this city which is laden with history and filled with architecture of a scale which I found difficult to fathom. Interestingly, Dresden was nearly bombed to the ground during World War 2. The crown jewel of the city, the Frauenkirche, was nearly entirely decimated, but was rebuilt during the 90s. Upon entering Dresden and checking into the hotel right in the heart of the Altstadt (or Old Town), we proceeded to walk towards the eye candy, and by eye candy I meant the buildings and not men. Although, there were some rather good looking Germans around to be fair. We walked past the ... read more

Ici on ... read more

Winter travels in Eastern Europe – Dresden, Germany – The New Year in the Historic Green Vault We drove our car 3,300 km from Minsk, Belarus where we are teaching to see the cities, Christmas markets and quiet snow covered countryside of Belarus, Poland, Czech Republic and eastern Germany. We finally made it to eastern Germany. It felt like a different world; we were in a howling Czech snowstorm as we entered a tunnel on the border and emerged into a sunny and warmer (10 degrees warmer) Germany. The storm caught up to us as we entered Dresden though and we were hurrying from place to place to escape the cold wind. We strolled (quickly) across the bridge to the castle. It was New Year’s Eve and everything was closed so we ducked into a wine ... read more

Day 210 Monday 15th August 2016 – Berlin to Dresden Cannot believe we are leaving Berlin today as it only feels like we got here yesterday. Our bus wasn’t till 1pm so we could have a slow start to the day and had our usual breakfast at a café around the corner before getting into our packing. The metro is so easy to use so there was no point in getting a taxi to the bus station. My only problem was that I bought so many books in Berlin that I think I am carrying half the Mitchell Library around with me – I think we will need to send some stuff home again. We left the hotel at 11 in case we had any dramas getting out to the bus station and of ... read more

What a great night sleep. The bed was hard as a rock. You would think I would like camping out. I might if they had porcelain available in the woods. I don’t need privacy; I just need good old porcelain. We ate so much last night at the Sophia Keller we weren’t hungry this morning. Kirsten was up and already showered and is looking at me like she expecting a project update. What, I don’t know. Oh yeah, Happy Birthday!!!!! That’s right today is Kirsten’s birthday!!!!!!! I roll out of bed and crawl into the shower. Now were staying in the IBIS Budget so the room is small and the shower is in the corner with glass walls. Talk about a peep show. Kirsten has everything packed and ready as I finish getting dressed. She’s ready ... read more

This Zimmer is a keeper, the owner fell in love with Kirsten. They talked German back and forth, Omi would have had a great time here. He knew all about Fulda; well he knew everything …..he’s German. We had our first German Breakfast; soft boiled eggs, rolls, meats and strong coffee. Kirsten loves it. I turned the phone on to check for messages and yes we have messages. Nothing pressing, so I turned off the phone. I like turning off the phone. I go and load our bags into the car while Kirsten pays our bill. I’m done and waiting and waiting, so I walk back in and find Kirsten and the owners wife just talking away. Hello…. I thought you were in a hurry, oh, you’re done loading the car. She turns to the wife ... read more

The forecast for today when we went to bed last night was not good with rain predicted for most of the day which will not make for a pleasant day of sightseeing. However, the forecasters thankfully have got it wrong and there were patches of blue sky appearing as we awoke. Late last night Gretchen got her mobile phone working and the updates downloaded and there was time to check this morning that it was still working as she had left it last night. Now there was no need to go searching for a replacement phone today. We are meeting Emily today who is taking the train down from Cottbus, an hour and a half or so north of Dresden where she is studying at the University. She is going to guide us around the sights ... read more

Geo: 51.051, 13.7337We are saying goodbye to Germany today until 30 September when we travel to Munich for Oktoberfest. Picked up a car in Berlin and drove to Prague with a stop in Dresden. Spent too little time in Dresden, just an hour or so, seeing Zwinger and Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady). Dresden is the city the British and us (the British are the primary culprits here) firebombed needlessly at the very end of WW II, as there was nothing here but civilians and beautiful buildings. We would like to add it was a pleasure driving on the autobahn again. No inconsiderate folks staying in the left lane. In fact, stay in the left lane with someone wanting to pass and expect to be the appropriate victim of much abuse from everyone. Additionally, we drove a ... read more

Sunday 28 June 2015 Four years ago we had Dresden listed as one of those "must see" cities. Time was against us and it was with some disappointment that we had to by-pass Dresden. Today we keep that appointment in Dresden. After last night's thunderstorm the morning is clear and no sign of moisture in the air. Perhaps we have the weather gods on our side for a change. The long term forecasts are good and by the end of the week we might be complaining about the heat. Our friend Polly says we'll be in Dresden by lunchtime, that's driving the equivalent of Dunedin to Christchurch in three hours. Oh boy, bring on the Regensburg-Dresden Grand Prix. We check out the map for an alternative and find there are no B roads going our way. ... read more
