Oddly shaped old house
Just off to the side of the town square in Bernkastel-Kues
(typing this on Oct. 6th) I've never felt so overwhelmed and lonely in my entire life. The drive down to Trier was wonderful. The area is goregeous. We visited a town along the Mosel (don't remember the name, I'll have to get it from my room). It was absolutely gorgeous! The houses were all sooooo old. I have some really nice pics, but as of yet can't put them online. I'm working on that though and will hopefully have some pictures up soon. We walked around the town for awhile and then found a place to have lunch. I got to try Federweisse for the first time. (It's kind of like grape juice but with some alchohol in it. We then walked around some more and just enjoyed looking at all the old buildings. Some were built in the 1600s, others earlier. We then found a nice square and had coffee and hot chocolate (was a bit chilly). Mama and I wanted to take a ship ride on the Mosel but missed it there, so we drove a little ways to a nearby town and caught it there. Marina and Papa drove the rest of the way to their friend's
Shackles in the Town Square
The writing above me says "criminal punishment".... yeah, I got myself into a little trouble... hehe house. Mama and I met them there. (sorry for not having the names of the towns, I wasn't expecting to find the computers today and don't have all the info with me) We spent the night with Mama and Papa's friends. They are really nice people and have invited me to go to Luxembourg with them sometime =). They live about a half hour away from Trier.
This morning we left there place early and headed to Trier. I was soooo excited=) Couldn't wait to see my place. It wasn't hard to find, but when I saw my apartment I was a little dissapointed. It's a nice place, but for some reason wasn't what I was expecting. The floor is a wierd almost cement like floor. Everything was white (and quite dirty). Mama, Papa and Marina cleaned while I unpacked. We also moved some of the funiture around. oh yeah, and my pillow stinks!!!! It's just a big extremely flat square of material. Even folded in half it's not very big. (I'm definetly gonna have to buy a new one, but for now it works). After most things were packed, we drove into the city (the univeristy is a
Vinyards along the Mosel
It's wine country in this region of Germany. I still can't believe how steep all the vineyards are and everything is done by hand. little out of town on top of a big hill) to do some last minute shopping (buy stuff to clean with, groceries, etc.) After that, they took off 'cause they had a long drive ahead of them (about 4 hours). They helped me sooooo much. They really are a great family. I mean, Mama and Papa even took a day of vacation to move me into my place.
When they left I felt really lonely. All I had in my place to keep me company was the radio. I didn't know anyone or where anything was. I've never felt that isolated in my life. And everything was sooooo white! I decided instead of staying in my room and feeling overwhelmed and lonely I would walk around the Univeristy and start to familiarize myself with it. That helped so much. I found a place (a little over a 5 min. walk) where I can buy groceries, fresh bread, books, stuff to decorate my room with, etc. That made me feel so much better. I didn't feel lost anymore. It was still lonely in my little apartment (little bathroom, tiny kitchen, and bedroom) but it wasn't as bad as it had been earlier. Papa called before I headed off to bed to see how I was doing. It was really really nice to get to talk to him. I don't think I had ever been as happy to get a phone call in my entire life. My room has a little more color to it now and it's begining to feel like my place now that I've gotten everything organized. I'm using one of my two fleece blankets as a temporary rug (maybe permanent if I don't feel like buying one) and it has added so much more color to the room. Even in one day I'm beginning to feel much better about my place and am beginning to like it.
