A380, straight-on
At least, I think it's an A380. In any case, it's a big plane, and it seems to be coming right at us. Geo: 50.0407, 8.56882
Our flight on a Lufthansa 747 from Denver to Frankfurt went pretty well. We had put in a bid for an upgrade to Premium Economy, but we didn't offer enough (only $265 per person), so it was back to our regular seats. But there was a USB port next to the seatback screen, so my powerhungry self could relax, knowing that my iPhone would be at 100%!w(MISSING)hen we arrived.
(for those who might need it, it's worth noting that there is a regular outlet under the seat, for those who might need to charge a laptop or something).
We arrived at about 10 (early), and our connecting flight to Nice didn't leave til 4:30, so we had plenty of time to kill.
In looking at one of the many interactive info maps that are placed around the airport, we saw that there were airport tours to be had. By golly, THAT sounds interesting! Consult the map.....Terminal 1, Concourse B, we're in Terminal 1, should be simple.
You
know we've said that before.
We grabbed a quick bite (little did we know we'd need that sustenance) and then headed off to Concourse B. And we did see signs to the airport tour. So we Frankfurt Airport
You know...proof that we were there, or something. followed them.
Then we lost sight of the signs, so we turned around and found one again. It pointed us in a different direction, which puzzled us, but okay.....
We followed those signs around the concourse, into the hallway for the parkade, back around the concourse.....
If we were on "The Amazing Race", this would have been the point where the camera points at the spot where we're supposed to go, as we walk by, oblivious.
After about 10 minutes of following signs that all seemed to bring us back to a spot where the tour desk wasn't, we popped into the business that WAS there, which was a Sixt Diamond lounge.
Turns out, the airport tours desk
used to be there, but now it's located about 300 meters away.
On an unrelated note, did I mention that I hit my 10,000 steps on my Fitbit, on the 11th? Unusual for me....
So. The tour.
We found the desk, paid our €7 apiece, and after about 5 minutes' wait, we were off on the tour with about 6 other people.
After going thru a security check, we were loaded onto a bus, and our tour of the tarmac began.
The tour was only given in German, so aside from Zzzzz.....
Using my leg for a pillow, Dejo managed to doze off enough to start kinda snoring. picking out the occasional number (though we didn't know what the number was in reference to), we were mostly just enjoying the view.
It was kindof cool to be sitting practically underneath an A380, or driving past a 747. And seeing some of these bad boys take off, from what was effectively 1 lane over, was fairly unique.
But I was disappointed to not get any sort of view into the inner workings of the airport, like the luggage system. When my fam trip from Rail Europe toured the airport in 1997, we got to see that, a lounge, and other stuff. I suppose in a post-9/11 world, it shouldn't surprise me that $8 doesn't get me more access.
We were both fading pretty quickly, so we went and found our next gate, and Dejo found a way to sortof lie down, and he got in a pretty decent nap.
I tried very hard to stay awake, to keep watch on our stuff. I mostly succeeded.
Once we got onto our flight to Nice, I don't think I even made it to "aft doors armed" before I was Out.
Apparently, they served a small sandwich as a snack......couldn't prove it by me.
1 hour, 25 minute flight = 1 hour, 25 minute nap.
