Quick weekend in frozen Berlin
I've always pictured Berlin as a dark city suffering from terrible weather and an unpleasant past but as years went by I heard more and more good things about the place. So when the time came for vacation, was a natural choice for spending a short romantic weekend. In the past, I wasn't too keen about these short hops to Europe, where time and money are spent on hectic shopping journeys and fancy restaurants but the deal we found was too good to miss.
The good thing about short trips is the fact that almost nothing needs to be packed and a rather small trolley suffice, containing only jeans, shirts and a coat.
When we landed the weather was awful - snowy and cold. No such a big surprise when it comes to winter in Berlin, but we Israelis consider anythig below 15C as extreme. We wrapped ourselves with everything we had and out we went to taste some high culture, in other words, shopping. Now you see, H&M for my little fashion addict is what IKEA was for me before opening their first branch in Israel. A wet dream. So I can definitely
The Jewish Museum
Kadishman's "Fallen Leaves" sympathise. Half a day went down the drain...
Shopping usually makes me hungry so we visited KaDaWe shopping center, a boring mall, only to witness the sea-food miracles on its sixth-floor, offering any kind of varmint planet earth has to offer. We sneanked out on the account of our religion and went out for Italian.
To avoid the freezing weather we made use of the city tour bus, taking off from Potsdamer Platz. First stop was in Sony Center with its nicely decorated X-mass trees. Also on the agenda were the Reichstag, Berlin's wall, the Museums Island and some other. Tour bus was a convenient way to experience the city in a nutshell with its frequent arrivals (every 15 minutes).
The highlight of the tour was the Jewish museum. Opened in 2001, this much-talked-about and unusual building features a design based on lines connecting historic events and locations of Jewish culture in Berlin. We found it to be much relevant and interesting.
To release the tense atmosphere of the musuem we went out at night seeking for the best club in town. But we just asked the wrong person - the reception clerk, an elderly gay
at his fifties. He pointed out the hottest club around, but forgot getting updated since the eighties. After strolling in the snow for two hours we found that den. Before getting in I asked a cool guy outside if we should go in. His answer was "yeah, it's a cool place, but do keep an eye on your girlfriend inside, but other than that you'll enjoy it a lot". We decided to give up the pleasure and went to the Weekend Club, an upbeat place immediately set us in the right mood. Two beers after we were bouncing to the sounds of techno beats.
Highlights - The Jewish Museum - must-see
- Kudamm St - shopping
- Restaurant Austria (Bergmannstrasse 30) - huge(!) schnitzels
- Weekend Club - hip club in Alexanderplatz.
