Bebelplatz - Staatsoper

Staatsoper (National Opera House) was undergoing renovations when we visited, and this is just a taste of what was on its roof. The building was completely destroyed twice during WWII, but was re-rebuilt by the East Germans in 1955. Today it is still going strong as one of the best opera houses in the world.

Located in Bebelplatz. On the 10th of May, 1933, Nazi students gathered books from a hit list and burned over 20,000 books in the middle of Bebelplatz. Books by Jewish writers, books by socialists, and books where the message was pacifism or tolerance were burned. Today, there is a great installation about the book burning in the middle of this square. The memorial is a simple idea, with a powerful affect.

Hi again
Great to see your photos and know where you have been. hope all is still going well. as for here, Grandad is now home after nearly 2 weeks in hospital. He is still not as well as he should be but some of his medication has been changed which should help. Grandma is grateful to put her feet up in her own lounge. Nothing much happening this end. Oh, mum got her new bright red Getz today, so she is very excited even if the loss of money from her account is a bit depressing. Went ot Woodford on Sunday for Jacob's birthday and after a lot of mucking around we managed to find a nice place to celebrate. a pleasant day in all. Bye for now. lots of love to you both.
