It has been cold and raining the last two days but we got just a few showers and broken clouds today with the temps still in the 40's. While most of the passengers went off for a tour of the town, about 30 hardy souls including us went off in search of WWII history. There are a lot of explanations as to why Hitler held his rallies here and also as to why the Allies decided to hold the WWII war crimes trials in the same place. In the former case, it seems that Hitler disliked Berlin (which never really supported him) and Nuremberg is a transportation hub that was easy to reach from most of Germany. The Allies, on the other hand, chose the city because there was a large and suitable courtroom in the ... read more

Frankfurt to Munich via Nuremberg Here in the fourth blog from Germany we have collected some very disperse kinds of sites. We can't for our lives find any kind of common denominator to these places other than that they all are in Germany and that we visited them all in just a few days during our vacation. So instead of a lengthy introduction, we jump into telling about the first of these places - a place with a name of literary fame. Frankenstein Castle On top of a hill near Darmstadt sits the ruins of Frankenstein Castle. It is possible that Mary Shelley never visited this castle but it is believed that it served as an inspiration when she wrote her novel Frankenstein. When we read that there is a Frankenstein Castle we felt that we ... read more

Cathy heard a sharp snap this morning and turned to me in bed and asked, "What was that?" "That my dear was the crack of dawn!" I replied. It was 5:45 in the morning when I work up to get our luggege locked and loaded and prepared to leave outside our door. The porters were coming at 6:30 to gather our luggage to load onto the bus for our trip to Bamberg, via Nurnberg so we could board the Viking Longship IDI to begin our 8 day cruise to Paris. It was going to be a long day. I packed the bags, double checked the room to make sure we were not leaving anything behind, and put our three bags outside our room. Our next order of business was breakfast. We headed down to the first ... read more

Sehr userfreundlich. Jetzt muss ich also nochmals dazu recherchieren.... read more

Christmas Market Day 2.... WOW, I wake up to someone rubbing my foot, it’s Kirsten. She smiles and says good morning sleepy head. I rollout of bed and get ready for another day of chasing after St Nicolaus. As I walk from my room to the kitchen, the aroma of German coffee is leading me all the way to an awesome German breakfast. Everyone is sitting around the table talking about yesterday and where we’re going and what we’re doing today. Me... I’m smiling knowing all I need to do is get my navigational orders keyed it into the MAPS and operate the Apple Car app. And you thought I was important, LOL. Today we will be visiting two Christmas Markets. The first one is Bamberg, our second is Nuremburg. Lots of driving today, however the ... read more

It is a gorgeous morning just as my weather app promised. I am very much looking forward to the day as I have lots of plans of things to see in Nürnberg. Firstly, I enjoy a fabulous breakfast in the third-floor breakfast room of the Hotel Central. They have a terrace up here with amazing views over the old city. I am meeting our local guide, Claudia, at 10.30 for a coffee in the Hauptmarkt - whilst she has a break with the group that she is guiding today. This is extremely kind of her and really helpful for me. I have plenty of time before our meeting and want to use this time to walk the city walls. The weather is just lovely - not too hot, but warm, sunny and great for walking. It ... read more

Tuesday morning I go down early for breakfast so I can get out again for another walk before I have to leave Prague. I want to take a look at the location of the hotels that we will use next year and also wish to see the astronomical clock in action. This means being there at 09.00 as this happens every hour on the hour during daylight. I enjoy an excellent breakfast in this small and delightful hotel. It has so many nice touches. I would definitely recommend this hotel (Jungmann) for any independent traveller to Prague. The location is fabulous. It is relatively inexpensive and it completely exceeded my expectations. Ask for Room 101. I see lots of the Old Town, retrace my steps over Charles Bridge and manage to catch the 09.00 performance at ... read more

Leaving Antwerp (after possibly defrauding the Belgian tram system but we'll never know) we headed through the rain to Heerlen and the best zoo in the world. Having managed to manhandle Seth past the gift shop (just) and awau from the people in front doing much weed, we took a tour through all the animals at record speed, Seth determined to see everything quicker than quick and get back to the promised land of the gift shop! At this zoo is a lovely central restsurant, eating area and play park. We've been twice before and both times Ash has been 100% fazed by the restaurant and how to order /buy food there. We will keep coming back until, on one glorious visit, we will all get what we wanted, Ash won't come out looking like he's ... read more
