The majority of the group took our first independent trip on Friday, September 7. We caught our train at 9:20 am and road the train to Munich, which took an hour, and then transferred to the train to Fussen, which was 3 hours.
Luckily, we got the whole train to ourselves, all 14 of us! The train ride went by quickly, at least for me. I played Phase ten for the whole ride...and we didn't even finish the game.
Once we got closer to Fussen, we all took pictures from the open train windows to get great shots of the Black Forrest and the mountains. It was much colder there than it was when we left Ingolstadt. Once we reached Fussen, we left the train station to ride a bus that took us directly to the base of the hill/castle. The ride was only 10 minutes. The best part of the bus ride was getting closer to the castle because we just got more and more excited. Most of us had not seen pictures of the castle before, so seeing it for the first time was amazing.
We got off the bus and bought our tickets for the
Fussen
The closest town to the castle...we took the train into it. castle tour. We also shopped in some gift shops that were near the ticket counter. Then we proceeded to make the long walk up to the castle. We were told that it would be a half hour walk...and were told nothing about how strenuous it would be. Like I said, it was cold after we got off of the bus. But on the way up, we were all sweating. It was very steep, windy, and long. But it was a great workout- we all are on our way to great calves! It took us about 20 minutes to fully make our way up, but we would stop and take pictures (like at a smaller castle and waterfall). We were also lucky enough to get a group picture...that was really fun asking the Germans in English! But she seemed to understand what I meant. Once we got up to the castle, the group split. I had to go to the bathroom, so I missed the really good photos. Most of the group continued up the hill and then crossed a BRIDGE (which was up really high!) to get better shots of the castle. They were nice enough to share the pictures
with me.
We were not allowed to take pictures inside of the castle. So here is the story behind the castle, courtesty of Wikipedia.com:
"Neuschwanstein was close to completion when, in 1886, the King was declared insane by a State Commission under Dr von Gudden and arrested at the castle. The King could hardly control himself as he asked von Gudden "how can you declare me insane? You have not yet examined me!" Taken to Schloss Berg, he was found on June 13, 1886, in shallow water in Lake Starnberg, drowned, along with von Gudden, the psychiatrist who certified him. The exact circumstances of his death remain unexplained."

it's fun to know that we've walked the same road in a different country at different times. does that make any sense?
