Fenerbahce
The Fenerbahce match For my last day in Istanbul, I headed over to the Asian side via ferry. I had no idea how to get to the stadium for the Fenerbahce match, nor did I have a ticket. After stepping off the ferry I asked two guys in Fenerbahce jerseys about the whereabouts of the stadium and they took me under their wing. First, the took me to a reliable place to get a ticket at close to face value. Then we got some beers and I met a bunch of Turks who were entralled that there was an American going to see their team. The crowd was again really good but not significantly better than the Besiktas crowd. Although Besiktas won and Fenerbahce drew.
The next day I flew to Munich and met up with Doc in the airport. After numerous overnight buses and trains, a two hour flight is a cakewalk for me now. We took the train into the city center and then the metro to the same campsite I stayed at in 2006. It has been really rainy and very cold. Last night, the rain drops on the tent were literally frozen.
Germany has probably the biggest beer
Munich 1
My obligatory Oktoberfest stein shot culture on the planet and it is the last week of Oktoberfest so we've pretty much been drinking constantly, as well as eating huge portions of pork knuckle, endless amounts of sourkraut, and the best chicken in the world. Germany is not a good place for vegetarians. Doc got sick one day so I strolled around with a bunch of Germans from the campsite. The campsite is again almost completely filled with Aussies and Italians. We also of course spent lots of time at the tents at Oktoberfest talking to random people from all over the world. We also had some fun with Doc's German phrasebook saying ridiculous things to drunk German girls.
The other day we went to the Bayern Munich match and it was one of the nicest stadiums I've ever seen. The crowd was pretty good but not nearly as good as the Turkish crowds. At the match, we met a rich American guy who builds roller coasters. He had been in Munich for a little while and was really happy to meet other Americans. So he let us shower in his big, fancy hotel. It was easily the best shower I've used since leaving home.
Munich 2
Inside the Augustiner tent He also insisted we eat at this expensive restaurant that had really good pork knuckle dishes. After we said it was out of our budget, he just put it on the company's card.
Tonight we're of course going out drinking and eating more of the best chicken in the world and tomorrow I leave for Thailand! This is probably the place I was most looking forward to on my whole trip. The internet should be okay in Bangkok but then I'm heading into the jungle and into the rest of southeast Asia, where even electricity is sparse in certain areas. So I'm guessing the recent photo surge is coming to an end, at least for a little while.
