Ladenburg at night
The German word for today is, Kartoffel. Now that I know what this word means I seem to be seeing it everywhere. Which makes sense since “Kartoffels” seem to be a very important part of the German diet and are prepared many different and delicious ways.
Earlier this week was dinner in a town called Ladenburg. Only a few kilometers north-west of Heidelberg this town is spectacular. It was after dark when we arrived so I hope to go back one day during daylight. It has cobblestone streets, gingerbread houses and I’m told there are actual roman ruins there.
We ate at a restaurant called “Kartoffel” which literally translates to “Potato”. It was built in 1683. Needless to say, the potatoes were fabulous! But the highlight is the steak that you cook for yourself on a hot stone.

Hot Rocks
Wow, the hot rock cooking treatment was so cool!!! I need to figure out that one for either a restaurant in the states, or to do it at my house. (Watch out for little hands reaching across the table, in the land of too hot Mccie Die's coffee burns!). Well, it looks like a piece of polished granite, which is then heated in the broiler of an electic pizza oven... and placed on a special metal holding rack. And hot it is... stays hot to cook the big thick steak... and then warm enough for the entire meal. Could warm your hands or buns on it all night long in a cold German gast haus... (can any one say Bed warmer!) Any one going to Mannheim/ Heidelberg should eat here... Ladenburg, also has a nice church with roman ruins at the foot of the church wall. Been There
My wife took me to that very restaurant for my birthday the last year we were in Germany. It was a great time. The dipping sauces were great. The baked potato was huge, and had enough sour cream to kill a lesser person. I loved it. Thanks for the pics.
