Überlingen town center
Ueberlingen is one of the largest and one of the most beautiful towns on Lake Constance.

The town annually records more than 500,000 overnight stays and many more come to town only for a short day trip.

The shore promenade - the largest riverside walk on Lake Constance - is especially inviting. During the warmer months of the year, i.e., April - September, locals and tourist alike love to sit in one of the numerous cafes by the lake and enjoy a glass of wine under the shining sun (try a local 'Weissherbst' rosé wine). In winter there are a lot less tourists here. But still, even a sunny winter day can reward you with wonderful views of the lake. Stroll along in the historic town center. Visit the attractions of the city:

- The historic town hall with the famous woodcuts by Jakob Russ.

- St. Nikolaus Minster, the largest late-Gothic structure on Lake Constance.

- The Franciscan Church, built in 1348.

- The 'Greth', a merchant storage and business house from the 18th century.

Historically, the town of Überlingen was first recorded in the year 770 AD. The city center with the cathedral, town hall and fortification goes back to the foundation by Emperor "Barbarossa" (Frederic Redbeard, actually his real name was Frederic I of Hohenstaufen) in 1180.

Ueberlingen city flourished between the 13th and 16th century due to winegrowing on the slopes of Lake Constance.

During the Thirty Year's War, the Swedes tried to conquer the city in 1632 and 1634 but were only successful in 1643.

In 2002 Ueberlingen's tourism industry suffered shortly but badly from the effects of a tragic midair collision between a cargo airplane and a Russian passenger jet carrying Bashkirian kids to a holiday resort in Spain which happened over the skies of Ueberlingen. A large monument resembling a pearl chain can be found near Ueberlingen-Brachenreuthe to commemorate those who died in July 2002.
