Welcome to the penultimate entry in my trek across Europe. This blog describes the route my friend Billy and I took through the Northern Alps from Lake Geneva (or Lac Léman) to Briançon in a little over two weeks, a journey which almost certainly is the hardest but one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. If at times I descend into hyperbole or exaggeration then please forgive me for the landscape was truly spectacular whilst you have to (or certainly I had to) dig deep to find the determination and resolve to endure the many setbacks, fatigue and discomfort which is part of trekking through a terrain as difficult as the Alps. I've included details of the stages that we did to illustrate the effort that went into completing this section of the ... read more

9/9/09 Andrew rode his bike all the way around Lake Annecy this morning, about 70 km, while I took a hike through the forest. A great way to start the day inclusive of our fresh croissant and coffee. We wish we could stay longer in Annecy but since we can’t, we are taking the long way out of town around the lake. A beautiful drive all the way around. There is only one section of the lake that is dedicated to beautiful waterfront houses. Lucky people with a view of the lake, the city and mountains. We are off to Switzerland today and are taking a detour through Mont Blanc before we climb into the Swiss alps. We passed a lot of green farmland on the way. The mountains got bigger and bigger with each switchback ... read more

The hotel gave us coffee but was not set up for breakfast, so we drank coffee, tried to get online (failed as the hotel connection was down), packed up and left. We stopped at a motorway services where we had the breakfast deal (espresso, orange juice and a chocolate croissant each) then headed for Mont Blanc through a series of tunnels, culminating in the Mont Blanc tunnel itself. This tunnel is long and, unlike the tunnels on the way does not have separate bores for each carriageway. It is, however, really well lit and disciplined. Not really very exciting and none of the tunnels were magic today. The weather stayed glorious throughout - still mid - twenties now at 18:00. Chamonix, as predicted, is expensive. Our hotel (Pointe Isabel) is really nice and we have a ... read more

It all started when Alice was younger and went on family ski holidays, from then the dream was born and she knew she had to be a chalet hostess. So it came down to when, it would take five months to do a season from December to April, so we had to wait till we were at least out of university. Then we decided, well if you’re going to take five months we may as well make it a rounded year and travel to see a bit of the world that you can’t ordinarily do in an average job. So Australia was decided, It meant having three Winters back to back, but we’d have five months in the snow of the French Alps and then seven months in Australia. We came to a conclusion that the ... read more

Above the clouds away from the core of the Earth, sits the peak of Mont Blanc. Tallest mountain peak in all of Europe, it sits at 3842 meters above the numberless height of the sea. The entire Leysin American School staff was treated to a day in Chamonix, France (super famous ski resort) and the mountains above it. It was mind boggling to go up there with the new staff I'd just met and sit above the clouds on the peaks of the Swiss/French Alps. I even felt like I was unfairly allowed to see such an amazing sight with my own eyes, without having to work to acheive such natural beauty, but hey, gondolas have paved the way, and so be it.... read more
