I live in the dog shit capital of the world. The French call it "le crottin de chien," but a rose by any other name, so to speak. The owners give their pooches carte blanche, and for the rest of us, it's like a game of minesweeper out there. You can always pick out the ones who are going to leave it. They have a preemptive look of guilt about them, and their eyes dart back and forth to keep a look out for potential witnesses to their little transgression. Then, when the deed is done, they abscond with alacrity, secure in the knowledge that no one will be able to trace le crottin back to the source. I mean, no one likes carrying around a load of sombody's crap in a plastic bag; I get ... read more

My goodness how the time flies when all you do is eat cheese and drink wine. I am approaching the end of month one in Chambéry, fat as a Christmas goose. I have joined a gym to counteract the effects, but the food here is just so damn GOOD. Suspiciously good, even. I'm going to be spoiled rotten--my lean cuisines may not cut it when I get back. My French is....improving? I'm asking you, because I really don't know. I suppose it can't be UNimproved, but there is a first for everything. The more I learn, the more I realize I have yet to learn. And the longer I am here, it becomes more apparent that I am a long ways away from fluency. Nonetheless, I have learned some pretty fabulous words. Here are my top ... read more

I feel...strange. I'm not...moving. I'm not in a different town every day living out of my larva shaped backpack. I'm not stealing individually portioned jams to eat with my baguette later on. I'm...still. I arrived in Chambery on Sunday night, after another disasterous EZ Jet flight. And after telling the man who manages the student apartments that I am more comfortable with English for important information, he proceeds to speak to me in French the whole time. Thanks bub. If I blow up your building because I don't know how to properly operate the oven, blame it on yourself. I've had very little time to explore the town, mostly because I have been catching up on sleep, eating hob-nobs, and watching the only English channel I get: CNN Asia. If anyone has questions about AirFrance flight ... read more

We rode from Tortona to Chamberry. abut 100 km to Torino, another 100Km to Frejus, through the tunnel (and the French border is announced within the tunnel by a sign) then 100Km down to Chamberry. Riding conditions were good but Ashley will say more on that. Scenery spectacular. We have found a nice hotel but it has no internet. I'm not sure where last night's connection came from - I think it must have been the hotel. Chamberry is pretty. It is also lively, at least by day. Today we ate too much. Breakfast in the hotel in Tortona, lunch in a service station in Italy (they do damned good lunches once you work out how to order them), excellent tarts and coffees here in Chamberry (we had a peach tart and a rhubarb and fig ... read more

I love France! Well... that might be an inaccurate statement. It's like saying that I like my hometown in Innisfail, when really I love our old home - a farm 5 minutes from Innisfail (in my memory - and heartwarmingly also in Raphael's - one of the best places that ever was and ever will be), do I love the main street filled with people who live in Innisfail? ugh - not so much. So to be more accurate. I love Raphael's farmhouse, situated about 10km from a small town Miribel-les-Eschelles! The beautiful view, the warm rooms, the lovely inhabitants who come home from work and school and smile when they see this odd relative stranger greeting them. My week in France was great! Well, 9 days really. Raphael and Claire both worked through the week, ... read more

I didn’t plan my trip to Annecy. It was the excitement of not knowing what to expect that thrilled me. I took a bus from Geneva and the journey lasted for one and the half hour. Annecy is a city in the Rhône-Alpes (Rôno-Arpes) region of east central France; it is on the shores of Lake Annecy and 22 miles south of Geneva. You know that you are about to cross the border when an uniformed officer boarded the bus and demanded every passenger to present their passport. When I arrived, it was noon with sun fiercely shining above my head. With only 5 hours to spend, I wasted no time. I grabbed a map from the travel agent by the bus station, quickly identified the few places i wanted to visit and started to find ... read more

Au Revoir The third year of my degree is in France studying at the university of savoie in Chambery. I'm there from the 31st of August and getting excited now, theres loads to get ready for but it should be ace. The one problem is that the contract to my accommodation starts on the 1st of September which is a Saturday. Being france nothing happens on the Saturday so I have to pick up my keys the day before! With any luck they'll let me move in that day, otherwise I'll be moving in at midnight! This year should be brilliant, after the first couple of weeks I should be well away, and being right next to the alps theres plenty of opportunity for cheap skiing and some awesome kayaking!! Once I'm all sorted out ... read more
